I love reading to kids, which is good considering that I am a tutor and that encompasses a large part of my jobs. Through the many years I have tutoring there are some books that are just not as exciting to kids as they may be to you. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of reading a book to a child who is bored with it. Check out the books I have hand picked so that you will always be a superstar when it comes to reading time.
Don’t Eat the Teacher by Nick Ward.
This book is about a young shark going to school for the first time. It is great because there are sections that can become interactive and it has a cute story to it as well. It is a great length, not too long or short.
When Dinosaurs Came With Everything by Elise Broach.
Dinosaur stories are favorite among many but especially little boys. This one is not particularly educational, but it is a fun story. It also helps give kids a good dose of imagination as the author suggests all sorts of unexpected uses for a pet dinosaur.
The Castaway Pirates by Ray Marshall
This book is a pop up book, has pirates, and features a shark being combated by stinky feet. Boy paradise.
Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Rinker
Every little boy I have ever known loves big trucks and constructions sites. This one is calming and great for bed time, but still engaging.
Stellalluna by Janell Cannon
Stellaluna is about a little girl fruit bat raised by birds. The pictures are beautiful and girls generally love cute animals.
Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
This book is a classic and has a movie and tv series to prove it. It is great because it features one great little girl.
How to be a Princess in 7 Days or Les by Lesley Rees
Plenty of people are hating on the princess books but I don’t think that is necessary. Sure, it shouldn’t be the only kind of book, but girls love princesses, so lets let them be little for a while.
My Pony by Susan Jeffers
Every girl dreams of having a pony and the little girl in this book is no different. It has beautiful colors and a dreamlike quality.
Chicka Chicka Boom by
This book is simple and kids loving the rhyming. They also love the novelty of the characters being the alphabet letters they are so familiar with.
Ferdinand the Bull
This one is now well known by many thanks to the movie The Blind Side, but even if that weren’t the case this book is fantastic and all about being yourself. Also, many love the nonviolent message of it.
Llama Llama Books by Anna Dewdney
Kids learn life lesson along side a llama. The books often involve rhyming. Vibrant colors are great too.
Corduroy Bear by Don Freeman
This story is classic and children love the idea of their toys having a life of their own. It is one that you the reader will love hearing over and over again too.
The Berenstain Bears by Stan & Jan Berenstain, Clifford by Norman Bridwell and Arthur by Marc Brown
These book are all wonderful, but why did I lump them togethere? Because these books are so iconic to kids you will be hard pressed to find a child who doesn’t recognize them. For that reason kids love them because they feel like they are hearing a new story from their best friend.
There are certainly books that didn’t make it onto this list that are worth reading and are wonderful I just chose the ones I felt are great and approachable to the most kids. Not to mention, most libraries will have them in stock.
