Indy 500 is a race held each year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It is usually held over Memorial Day weekend. Indy 500 is one of the most prestigious motor sports events in the world.
No other race in the world has statistics or legends like Indy 500. There were many exciting events that took place here. The following are a few below:
Exciting Moment #1
Ray Harroun was the first winner of Indy 500. He averaged 74.602 miles per hour.
Exciting Moment #2
The 2006 Indy 500, featured Sam Hornish Jr. of Team Penske. He passed Marco Andretti, just 200 yards before the checkered flag, and stole the race by 0.0635 seconds.
Exciting Moment #3
In 1982, Gordon Johncock led by 11 seconds over Rick Mears. Mears cut only one-second a lap off Gordon’s lead. The two cars were nose-to-tail with two laps to go. Johncock won by an amazing 0.16 seconds. It was the closest margin of victory in Indy 500 history, at the time.
Exciting Moment #4
In 1972, Tom Sneva broke the historic mark, with a 200.535-mph first-lap qualifying time. Also, he was the first driver to top the 210 mph barrier, in 1984.
Exciting Moment #5
In 2012, on the last lap, Takuma Sato dived to the inside of leader Dario Franchitti. His car spun around and hit the wall. He was so close to winning and taking both cars out. It was one of the most exciting finishes.
