I’ve gotten to know the Daytona Beach area quite well since moving to Florida a few years ago. I spend a lot of time in the city doing various things. So, naturally, food is a necessity during the day and during the evening. One random Saturday morning I discovered the tasty treat known as a “Breakfast Burrito.”
Believe it or not, I had never eaten a breakfast burrito before. Of course, I had seen them quite often while perusing the frozen food section at my local supermarket. To be honest though, they didn’t look all that appetizing or appealing to me so, needless to say, I never partook.
This particular weekend a friend of mine was in town and we were up early enough to grab breakfast. I’m not a big breakfast person, so where we ate was not very important. My friend chose a place just a couple of blocks from the ocean.
It was about 8:30 a.m. when we went in. There were several people seated already but there was plenty of space. We were quickly greeted and served our drinks. The breakfast burrito, stuffed with eggs, bacon and hash browns caught my attention and that’s what I ordered. When the burrito came it was nice and hot and had a pretty decent flavor too. For me, it was quite filling I definitely recommend it. The only downside to the place is that they don’t accept credit cards. I was a bit surprised by this.
This changed my thinking on breakfast burritos and over the next several weeks I decided to try them at other restaurants and cafes.
Now, a lot of people aren’t that fond of chain restaurants, and while it is true that some of them are a bit lackluster, I have had good success with Denny’s in Daytona. It’s located right down the road from Daytona International Speedway which is convenient for race fans. The traffic on International Speedway Blvd. leaves a lot to be desired however. Denny’s offers the Bacon Avocado Burrito. Combining avocados. bacon and scrambled eggs, the Bacon Avocado Burrito is quite tasty. It comes with pico de gallo and their version of chipotle sauce. A decent portion size that comes with a side of hash browns as well. Avocado and bacon was, at first, a strange combination but a very effective one nonetheless.
Not too far from the Halifax River on US 1 is Preston’s Eatery. I like diners and cafes. The smaller settings are just suited more for me I guess and this is one of them. Quaint but yet decently sized with a nice menu selection. Green peppers, scrambled eggs with grilled sausage and covered in cheddar cheese. It’s an average-sized serving but packs an excellent taste. This is probably my favorite breakfast burrito.
Dancing Avocado Kitchen
Not many people notice this more healthy-minded cafe. A lot of people may think a healthier menu equals less taste but they would be wrong. The Dancing Avocado Kitchen has several different types of wraps and burritos. All are really good. I’ve yet to try the mushroom because I don’t like mushrooms all that much. What’s nice is you can add ingredients to your burrito. For a more breakfast flavored burrito, I recommend the Egg & Cheese. I added avocado and onions to mine. The ingredients were fresh and crispy and it was one the best tasting meals I’ve had. Nice portion size, friendly staff and decent prices too. This is a must for all health conscious diners.
