Belief, Forgiveness and Salvation, Mine and Yours pt. 1
Belief is the first step to accepting forgiveness
The biggest hurdle to salvation is to simply believe in God, and Christ Jesus. My background was a devout atheist who resisted all religion and had full faith in there being no meaningful God. It should be noted that Atheism is a belief system. None of us has any facts to life other than that we exist. Beyond the fact we exist we are at a loss as to how or why we are here. From my faith in there being no God, through some of the worst trials in my life, I came to believe in God. This transformation was hugely based on giving the teachings of Christ Jesus an honest chance. This is where I place the focus of this work.
Every person has belief
As I reached my early twenties I came to a firm conclusion that nobody knows the truth. That fact led me to realize arguing about ‘proof’ for or against God or any particular type of God was pointless. For instance take the debate recently by Bill Nye and Ken Ham. That was simply a demonstration that we don’t know anything. No matter how much we learn and know about the universe we live in we cannot determine where we came from. As C.S. Lewis said in his work Mere Christianity (p.33), “Since that power, if it exists, would not be one of the observed facts but a reality that makes them, no mere observation of the facts can find it.”.
To a believer of a higher power they will always say one of two things, either science is wrong, or that science is just revealing the manifestation of God’s creation. To an Atheist, most will use emotional arguments because they don’t want to believe. Mature ones will agree with my old point of view, that we just don’t know so there is no reason to pick any one belief system over another. However, there is something unique about Christianity.
Why believe in Christ?
I can give many reasons to believe in Jesus Christ and as an extension of him the entire bible. I am not a scholar, and this is not a thesis. I am a common man writing a web article, so my answer will reflect those two realities.
I believe in Jesus Christ because he was blameless. He never excused sin, and he never accused sinners. He perfectly denounced sin and forgave sinners. This balance of two absolutes is so perfect it makes me sit completely still and silent when I think of it. I have neither response nor complaint to Jesus Christ.
Every argument given by anyone who refuses Christ Jesus is based on him not existing or not being who the bible says he was. On every level and in every way no one can or does refute that Christ Jesus in the bible was perfect or that his message was any less perfect.
The perfect message of Jesus Christ is a testimony to his perfection. Through one man sin entered all of mankind, and through one man all sin is forgiven. This beautiful symmetry is sitting there for everyone on earth, in any height of holiness or depth of sin, to grab for themselves. This is a treasure for each of us to hold on to.
Can we know God’s Ways?
The creator of our reality is beyond our understanding. Accepting we cannot understand God is an important step to believing in him. Those of us who think we can justify or understand God are only refusing to see the truth.
Consider our own children who are of our own flesh and blood. I cannot count the times my children thought it was a fun game to run away from me when I told them to wait near me. Perhaps at a park this is a game, but in a parking lot full of moving cars, or near a street this is not funny. None of my words will make them understand my meaning, they simply don’t realize the danger or the suffering that will come of being hit by a car. As the child doesn’t understand us, so we cannot understand God.
Isaiah 55: 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
The Bible and Christ are Real
Read the bible and see how true it is for you. Christianity is not simple. There is no sugar coating in the bible, it is tough, it feels right, and if you can get over the anger of your life you I believe you will see it too. In Mere Christianity (p.46), CS Lewis said, “It is no good asking for simple religion. After all real things are not simple. “. He continues (p.47), “Such people put up a version of Christianity suitable for a child of six and make that the object of their attack.” Once you move beyond the surface and take a serious look into Christianity you will see great things. God is God, we are not. He loves you and wants the best for you. This perfection of God becomes more apparent the more I study the Bible and pursue the Holy Spirit in me. He knows I am weak and wants to forgive me. This applies to you too. In my next article I will speak about forgiveness.
Let us pray:
Father, I pray that I continually pursue your knowledge and truth. I pray that I am able to see your word for its truth and holiness and that I can find others who have your light in them and that they show me the way. I also pray that I never hide my doubts, I believe that if I open my heart to you I will be given all the answers I will ever need. Amen.
