The successful musical “After Midnight” has been running successfully on Broadway for the past several months and now joining the cast is Grammy Award winning artists Toni Braxton and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. As fans, may know Toni Braxton has performed on Broadway in the past, but this will mark the very first performance by writer/singer/producer Babyface. The show has already been a favorite for New York audiences and with these two superstars joining the cast for this limited engagement, there is no doubt it will continue to be successful.
On Thursday, March 13, 2014, I had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with the two music powerhouses to discuss their involvement in the show and wondered what it was that they would be bringing to the production. Toni, mentioned bringing her originality and flair to each song while Babyface felt completely honored to be a part of such legendary music. Together they will each bring their unique voices and styles to an era known as the Jazz Age.
After Midnight is directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle and each performance is set to pull the audience into the sexy and smoky glamour of the original Jazz Age. After Midnight celebrates Duke Ellington’s years at the Cotton Club using his original arrangements and is performed by a world-class big band of 17 musicians hand-picked by living jazz legend, Wynton Marsalis.
During it’s peak, the Cotton Club featured a vast array of guest stars each week, known then as “Celebrity Nights.” After Midnight will reintroduce this exciting tradition by presenting stars of today in limited engagement appearances throughout the musical’s run.
Grammy Award-winners Toni Braxton & Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds can be seen in the show from 3/18/14 – 3/30/14 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City. With both of their many successes along with the release of their new album entitled Love, Marriage & Divorce, the performance should be very exciting.
