Vegan restaurants are nothing new to Chicago. In fact, the Windy City is home to so many vegan/vegan-friendly restaurants that they can be found everywhere from the smallest suburbs to the inner city. So whether you’re a full on vegan, vegan-curious, or dabbling part-time, there’s a vegan eatery just for you. This is especially true in Chicago’s hip Lakeview neighborhood. The following are three top-rated favorites that won’t disappoint.
Native Foods Café
These days every restaurant has sweet potato fries on the menu right? Well, here’s what makes Native Foods’ SP fries so different — wait for it — Chipotle Sauce! Oh yes, it’s that special and the entire neighborhood agrees. Besides a fresh take on fries, this bright-hued neighborhood haunt offers plenty of big windows for people watching on Lakeview’s famous Belmont strip, while noshing on an Oklahoma “Bacon” Cheeseburger with a cold Weiss beer.
FYI: Native Foods also has nut-free, soy-free, and wheat-free menus.
1023 West Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL 60657, (773) 549-4904, Hours: Mon.-Sun.: 11AM – 10PM, website: www.nativefoods.com.
Chicago Diner hasn’t changed much over the last several decades, and that’s because it doesn’t have to. This go-to vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurant is not only a hit in Lakeview, people come from all over the city and suburbs to enjoy the always hearty Soul Bowl (seasoned quinoa, spicy blackened tofu, chimichurri sauce, ginger-garlic greens, and black beans) and one of the largest selections of veggie/vegan burgers you’ve ever seen. I only have room for one, so try the popular Cajun Black Bean Burger-vegan style!
3411 North Halsted Street, Chicago, IL 60657, (773) 935-6696, Hours: Mon.-Thu.: 11AM – 10PM, Fri. 11AM – 11PM. Sat. 10AM – 11PM, Sun. 10AM – 10PM, website: www.veggiediner.com.
Okay, so Victory’s Banner is actually in Roscoe Village, but come on-Lakeview is like, right there. Everything about this place is truly awesome. It’s bright, yet calming, busy yet surprisingly relaxing. Vegans can feel comfortable ordering anything here because VB can prepare any dish the way you want it. Breakfast is wildly popular (try the tofu scrambler or raspberry French toast) and lunch (the last meal of the day at VB), is filled with vegan wraps galore (try the coconut-peanut veggie wrap) and filling green salads with creamy vegan lemon-tahini dressing.
2100 West Roscoe, Chicago, IL 60618, (773) 665-0227, Hours: 8AM-3PM. Closed Tuesday, website: www.victorysbanner.com.
