Breathing is something that we do not do consciously, much like we do not purposefully beat our own heart to pump our own blood. It happens on a subconscious level and is vital and supremely necessary for our existence, and unfortunately one thing the majority of us are not focused and centered on. We become painfully aware of our breathing when physically overexerting ourselves, and the breath comes gasping and harsh, or when inflicted with an upper respiratory infection, and due to congestion, the breath is wheezing and uncomfortable. A majority of the time we do not even realize that we are breathing, it’s just something that happens without our focus or attention.
Have you ever been driving somewhere, arrived at your destination, and then looking back do not remember a bit of your trip in the car? It is almost like you put the car on auto-pilot, and then you zoned out to events of the past or future, and miraculously arrived at your destination. Breathing truly and efficiently brings you centered on the present moment. In one, out one, in two, out two. If you consciously make all acts a meditation while focusing on the breath, you can easily make mundane moments throughout the day extraordinary.
Take, for example, cooking a meal: While chopping the vegetables or thawing the meat, focus on the breath in and the breath out, and do each step of the meals preparation with a whole heart and as a meditation. Don’t focus on thoughts of work or a confrontation you had with a friend, focus instead on exactly what you are doing in that present moment, whether it be turning on the oven or adding a pinch of pepper to a simmering pot of potato soup.
Dealing with difficult emotions
When feeling angst, pain, distress, or any general discomfort in life, meet these unpleasant feelings and emotions that are necessary and very much apart of our everyday experience head on by focusing on each and every breath to center you in this delicious present moment. All things negative that we experience in this beautiful life, are what bring light and existence to all things positive. So regardless of what is on your plate, accept it as this amazing present moment, and remember friends, just breathe.
