Need a quick answer to a career or personal dilemma? Career and life coach Marielys Camacho-Reyes will answer your concerns in her column “Ask the Coach.”
I have been thinking about starting a home business but since I have no experience in this kind of stuff, I do not even know where to start. I talked to a good friend of mine who has a baking business and she said that the first thing I need to do is to create a business plan. That sounds like a lot of work and the problem is that I know nothing about it. What are the best ways to start a home business? Should I hire someone to help me do this? My husband thinks I am crazy but is willing to support me financially until I get the business up and running. Is this a good idea?
The Soon to be Business Owner
Dear Soon to be Business Owner,
If that is want you really want to do, then I would say; go for it. If you do not know where to start, I will suggest you to do some online research to see the things you need to get this idea up and running. There is a lot of good information on the internet that can help you prepare a well-established business plan for your business. If after looking for information, you still have doubts on what to do, you can also contact a professional in the field that you want to work in and ask for pointers. By using other people’s experience as a guide (as you did when you contacted your friend), you will be helping yourself in creating an action plan to develop a successful business. Go ahead! Do not allow fear to keep you from achieving your goals. This is the right moment for you to start a home business. Just make sure that you understand that building a business from scratch requires a lot of work, dedication, patience, and above all, perseverance. So stick to that and give it a try. If you think you cannot do it by yourself, try to recruit people who can help you accomplish the things you need to accomplish to get the business up and running. I promise you that it will be a rewarding experience.
