Just south of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is antique shop haven. About five minutes away from Fort Lauderdale International airport on US Highway One, there are about 100 antique shops and one very fine ice cream shop called Jaxson’s. Jaxson’s Ice Cream offers a mammoth ice cream concoction called The Kitchen Sink. Be prepared to spend the day perusing antique shops and then go get ice cream.
All of the shops are either located on US Highway One or on the backside of the shops located on US Highway One (also called Federal Highway). Some of the sample and recommended shops:
Abika (# 3 North Federal)-French and European antiques
Candelite Antiques (# 10 North Federal)- A Southern style store
The Blue Butterfly (# 38 South Federal)-Vintage clothing
Verona Art (# 75 North Federal)-new and antique art
The shop hours vary, but most are open seven days a week. I usually arrive around 10:00 and all of the stores are open by then. I know some do close at 5:00 pm.
All of the shops have parking beside or behind the stores. Some of the parking is free and some of it is metered. I highly recommend you park in the Jaxson’s Ice Cream strip (# 128 South Federal) and work your way north to the stores on the west side. Then cross over to the east side and work your way south. You then end up at Jaxson’s for your ice cream treat. The parking there is free, but usually fills up by 11:00 am.
Time to Allocate to Your Dania Antique adventure
While this method of parking at Jaxson’s only has you walking for two city blocks (four total, two up and two down), plan on spending at least four hours at the shops. The finds are endless. I have purchased china, silver, and jewelry in my visits to Dania. My silver tea set was appraised at about three times the cost of what I paid for it, so you can and will find some antique bargains.
I live near by, so I drive my car. But Broward County has a fine public transportation system. Dania also has a community bus route. Both schedules can be obtained at this website.
Florida has more to offer than just fun and beaches. Locals and tourists love Dania Beach for their quaint antique shops and yummy ice cream.
