It seems that we have become accustomed to hearing of school shootings, but the breaking news I heard today came as a shock. A student had gone into a high school in Pennsylvania and attacked students and possibly staff with a knife or some similar item as they stated that many stabbings had happened. I instantly thought that this was yet another unexpected attack and that maybe no one was killed or seriously hurt.
As the day has gone on, I am hearing more reports about this attack. It seems that a 16 year old With student was taken into custody following the attack. With 20 teens and 1 adult attacked and two in critical condition, it seems that it was an attempt to seriously wound or kill the other students. The injured students range in age from 14-17. The young man accused in this attack is reported to have brought 2 “straight knives” measuring between 8 and 10 inches into the school and stab several students. Some of the ones injured were hurt during the attempt to get away from what was happening.
The attack happened at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pa. and an assistant principal finally stopped the early morning attack by subduing the student. The student is now charged with 4 counts of attempted murder and 21 counts of aggravated assault as well as being charged with one count of weapon possession on school grounds. Whether he was friends with any of those attacked is yet to be known or if he targeted them or if it was just a random act. Further details will come out in the next few days and it will be interesting to see what the motive was.
Hopefully, there are no deaths that result from this attack and the young man will explain why he did this. In the meantime, we as a nation need to figure out why these types of horrific things keep happening in the place we send our children to learn and what we can do about it. Whether the answer is armed guards or metal detectors or something else is something that is going to have to be addressed with all school officials.
