With “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” hitting movie theaters this year, the producers have been doing a lot of talking about what their plans are for the future of the franchise. Unlike Fox, which holds the rights to every mutant in the Marvel Universe as well as The Fantastic Four, and Disney, who has the rights to almost everyone else, Sony only has Spider-Man and his friends and foes. Despite this, they plan on making a universe based just around those characters. It seems hard to believe, but they have some solid plans for the limited pool of characters.
After this year’s movie, will be two films in existence in the brand new world of Spider-Man. There are also two spin-off movies already planned and a third movie to end the “Amazing Spider-Man” trilogy as well. While Sony wants a Spider-Man universe, similar to how Disney has the Marvel Universe, they are going at it in an interesting and unique way.
“The Sinister Six”
The biggest news to come out recently about the “Amazing Spider-Man” spin-off movies is that “The Sinister Six” will have Drew Goddard as the director. Goddard is a geek friendly director, co-directing the awesome horror film “The Cabin in the Woods” alongside “The Avengers” director Joss Whedon.
Of course, “The Sinister Six” is a movie that has a lot of comic fans at least interested in the concept. The main characters will be a group of six villains, although which ones remain in question. Most hints point to names like Electro, Rhino and The Green Goblin, since they all feature in the trailers for “Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Other possibilities include Doctor Octopus and Vulture, both of which were hinted at in the post-credit scene from the first “Amazing Spider-Man” movie. Either way, how the movies incorporate six villains as the main characters of a movie is the big question.
Not as questionable is the “Venom” movie. While The Sinister Six are all pure villains, robbing banks and killing people, Venom is more of an anti-hero. The only thing that makes Venom a villain at all is the fact that he hates Spider-Man. However, when he is not trying to kill Spider-Man, he is a hero to those who can’t help themselves, often portrayed as the protector of the homeless.
With that said, a Venom movie, which Alex Kurtzman will direct, can easily make him into a hero, and if the new “Venom” rumors are to be believed, his enemy might be Carnage. Those rumors were started in an interview with the “Venom” movie producers, who actually hinted that Carnage might be a perfect villain. He has similar powers to Venom, but is a sociopath and would make Venom look like a totally pure hero in comparison.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
