“Nice pink dress!” I said admiring my wife’s new nightgown.
“Idiot, it is peach, not pink,” she said jokingly.
She being the non-argumentative type, wanted to end the argument quickly. Having known very well how to handle me, she quickly grabbed my smart phone, which was lying nearby, and Googled for “peach color”. After the results were returned she clicked on the “images” link.
So there it was – a wonderful piece of knowledge. At this ripe old age I had discovered a new color – peach. Good.
I asked uncertainly, “How many colors are there in the world?”
“Well, there are millions of them – actually countless,” she drawled in her accented English.
When did mankind invent so many colors? I was aware of only VIBGYOR colors. Later on my color palette expanded a bit with the inclusion of pink, maroon etc.
Not to be outdone, I challenged her, “How many different pinks are there?”
“There are many: pale pink, baby pink, rani pink, fuschia pink, pearl pink, amaranth pink and, of course, your ‘peach pink’,” she winked.
“Ok. Those are just different shades of one single color. Tell me the names of at least ten ‘different’ colors which I am not aware of,” I was adamant.
“Lavender, burgundy, magenta, beige, rust, mauve, amber, mustard, vermilion, and cornsilk,” she shot off quickly.
I was convinced that my wife knew lot more than me about colors. So I tried to learn this art of color recognition. We had a long discussion.
Next day as I was about to leave home for office, she asked me to identify the color of the shirt I was wearing.
“Brown,” I said confidently.
Settling down after a burst of laughter, she said, “Rust.”
As per medical research dogs are considered to be color blind, because they cannot see certain colors. These colors include red, orange and green. Dogs can tell the difference between those colors, but they appear more yellow or blue. The only colors a dog can see are yellow, blue and violet.
Men are better. They see seven colors (VIBGYOR). Those in the software industry are more evolved. They see 16 colors. Remember the Windows 3.1 color palette? It was 4 bit. Hence it could show only 16 colors at the most. The present Windows version has a color depth of 32 bits. So it can display 16777216 different colors. And women can distinguish all of them!
So, logically and evolutionarily, men are closer to dogs! No wonder feminists scream their hearts out claiming that all men are dogs!
