Experiencing a car accident could be one of the most stressful situations a person could face in his life, and while filing an auto insurance claim is not as stressful as the actual accident, it could be one of the most tedious and unpleasant tasks to complete. This is very true, especially if don’t know what you are doing. Those who have done it in the past could relate to this. Unfortunately, after an accident, either you like it or not, you will have to file a claim.
Below, I will share with you a simple and easy step-by-step guide on how file an auto insurance claim.
Step 1: Gather the necessary information. At the moment of the accident, and after verifying that no one is seriously injured, start gathering all the information you think you may need for the claim. This may include a summary of what really happened, personal information of all the parties involved in the accident, photos of the damages for all the vehicles involved, copy of a police report (if applicable), and statements from any witnesses. This documentation will be very important when filing the claim. Lack of proper documentation may result in a claim disapproval.
Step 2: Call your insurance company immediately. After gathering all the documentation, calling your insurance company should be the second most important step you need to take when preparing to file a claim. Calling your insurance company early on in the process, will help you in learning the proper way to file the claim with them. Each company is different and they may have different procedures of how to do things. If you follow their procedure and file the claim the right way, your chances of getting the issue resolved right away may be greater than filing the claim the way you “think” should be filed.
Step 3: Start the process of filing claim. Once you have all the information you need, proceed to complete the claim. Once the claim is completed and your insurance company acknowledges that they received it, all you have to do is to wait for the final decision. Unfortunately, this may take some time, and the waiting period could vary depending on the company’s policies. Stay on top of the claim by contacting them often enough to stay informed on what the status is, but not too much to be considered a pest.
Step 4: Keep copies of any documentation related to the claim for at least a year. This step is very important in case that an audit is required. Having your paperwork in order could save you from a lot of headaches in case someone has questions or concerns after the claim has been resolved and closed.
As you can see my friends, filing an auto insurance claim is not as difficult as it may seem. It juts requires good organizational skills (to gather all the documents you will need) and some patience (to be able to deal with the process).
Remember; the process of filing a claim will vary depending on your company and the type of claim you are filing. If you are not sure about what to do or what to expect; contact your company right away. They will be able to help you out with any questions you may have.
