Like most of the readers out there I heard of Divergent, by Veronica Roth, from the display of new books at the local book stores. I admit I picked it up, read the back, didn’t believe I would enjoy it and put it back down. A mistake of epic proportions by the old “judging a book by it’s cover”. I never even picked it up again until I was in a Sam’s Club on Tuesday March 11, 2014 and finished it not even a full seventy-two hours later, the quickest I have finished a book in the past six years since graduating high school.
As many people have seen lately there is a movie that will be coming out later this month and the trailer looked interesting so I figured I would buy it and see how good it was. Honestly, as a budding author I can only hope that my skill and craft will be as good as Mrs. Roth’s one day because the book had me hooked from the beginning to the end. An end that left me wanting more of the series. I actually rushed out to the book store to pick up the final two books of the trilogy so that I could get more of Four and Tris’ stories. And learn more about the Divergent who exist.
For those of you who have not read the book yet let me give you a small break down of the book but don’t worry I won’t have any spoilers in here that you won’t get within the first few pages or the trailer.
Divergent follows the story of Beatrice Prior and her unusual abilities. At least unusual in that world. It is set in a dystopian futuristic Chicago where the five factions are located. Abnegation the selfless, Dauntless the brave, Erudite the smart and knowledge hungry, Amity the peaceful, and Candor the truthful. Anyone born into these factions will take a test in their sixteenth year that will tell them what faction they are best suited for and then they will choose. Will they leave their family forever and go to a new faction? Or stay and be potentially unhappy but in the loving arms of their families? When Beatrice goes through her aptitude tests she finds out that she is a rarity, a Divergent, who can choose her path instead of it being chosen for her.
In the trailer we see her facing her fears as she goes through the Dauntless initiation and to be honest that is where I have to stop or I would give away key parts of the book and series. If anyone has watched or read anything similar to The Hunger Games will love this series and to be honest I would gladly read this book a few more times before putting it on the shelf. Anyone on the fence about reading this book or even seeing the movie I urge you to read or see it. I honestly cannot wait to see the movie and I hope they keep it close enough to the book because there’s not a whole lot that I can’t see them being able to do with the latest CG.
So check it out, the whole trilogy Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant. I can promise you that if you read more than two pages you will want more. I can guarantee you that if you read more than the first 3 chapters you will be hooked. And I can assure you that if you read at least half of the book you won’t be able to get your hands off of it long enough to buy the other two. All in all I would give this book a five star rating and I cannot wait to see more from Veronica Roth, she set the bar for her work very high now and I believe she will deliver.
