A Guide to Pregnancy Nutrition and What You Should Avoid

Good nutrition during pregnancy is very important for a child to develop and grow healthy. When you are pregnant, you should pay more attention to what you eat, to ensure you and the baby are healthy and happy.

Your diet should provide enough energy and nutrients for your baby to grow and develop. In general, it is best to stick to the usual principles of healthy eating. Base your meals around starchy foods such as potatoes, rice and pasta, and aim to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Eat moderate amounts of protein sources such as meat, beans, fish, and milk products, and only small amounts of food and drinks which contain fat and / or sugar.

Ensure you consume a range of foods to obtain all the nutrients your body requires. Suggested daily servings consist of about 7 servings of whole grains and bread, enough fruit, green vegetables servings, and 2-3 servings of protein rich sources (meat, eggs, poultry, fish or nuts). Eat sweets and fats in moderation.

Incorporate a rich source of folic acid in your daily diet, such as green leafy vegetables, legumes (beans, chickpeas eyes and black beans) and veal. Every pregnant woman should take at least 0.4 mg of folic acid daily to avoid conditions such as neural tube defects.

Stop drinking, smoking and drugs – and get help if necessary. If you smoke or use drugs, now is the time to stop. Several researchers have discovered that smoking can lead to miscarriage, premature birth and babies with low birth weight. Note that some drugs can remain in the system even after its remarkable effects have disappeared.

In addition, research suggests that smoking can affect fertility and sperm less partner. In fact, studies have shown that even secondhand smoke can affect your chances of getting pregnant.

Alcohol can also get in the way of getting pregnant, so it’s a good idea to reduce the start attempt. Abstain completely during the last two weeks of the cycle if you have designed.
