Your first vacation as a couple can be a very enjoyable experience. Or, if you go about planning it in the wrong way, it can be a difficult event to survive. This article will detail the pitfalls to avoid on your first travel excursion with your new partner and how to make it a memorable experience in a good way and not in a negative one.
Do Something That You Both Enjoy
Find your common ground. If one of you likes fishing and the other is afraid of water, do not plan a wilderness canoe trip. However, if one of you loves art and old architecture and the other enjoys wine and Italian cuisine, maybe a trip to Italy would be a good idea. You wouldn’t be the great couple that you are if you didn’t share some compatible interests. If one of you is bored to tears, it won’t matter that the other one is on their dream trip. You will both be miserable.
Spend Time Together
This is especially applicable if you are traveling with others. When I was dating my wife, the first vacation that we took together was to a resort that my family had been making annual visits to since I was just a kid. On the first couple days of the trip, I did the same things I had always done every year. If my activities for the day weren’t something that my then-girlfriend was going to enjoy, I simply left her alone to do whatever she liked. By the mid-point of our week-long vacation, it was clear that she was not enjoying herself. We talked it over, and from that point on I made a point to spend more time with her. I still did the things I enjoyed with my family, but also took time everyday to do something with just her alone. It was a much more special first vacation because I reserved that time.
Take lots of photographs. Make sure you ask people that you meet to take pictures of you together. Peruse the gift shops and swap special souvenirs with each other. Make some stories that you will remember forever. Doing so will make your trip more special, both as you are experiencing it and also for years down the road. Don’t forget that you only get a chance to go on your first vacation as a couple once.
