A Colon Cancer Fundraiser

by yak max

On Sunday, May 18, 2014 (From 12p.m.-4p.m.) Robin LeeAnne, Owner of Francesca’s Fancy Flops hosted a Colon Cancer Fundraiser in Downer’s Grove, IL. The event was held at Capri of Downers Grove. An Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown Downer’s Grove.

Robin LeeAnne lost her grandmother last year (June 2013) due to Colon Cancer. She was diagnosed January 2013 and it took her life quite quickly. Robin didn’t even really know about colon cancer until her grandmother was diagnosed. When her grandmother was diagnosed, she contacted the Colon Cancer Alliance for more information. She never knew that colon cancer was so common.

Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the US. The American Cancer Society estimates 136,830 people will be diagnosed in 2014 and 50,310 will die from colon cancer in the United States (stats taken from Colon Cancer Alliance website).

After losing her grandmother to this horrible cancer, it was extremely important that she raised awareness as often as possible. She worked with some local doctors to put together several health events. At the time of losing her grandmother, she decided to have a life change. She gave up fast food completely and researched foods that we’re linked or caused cancer. Whenever possible, Robin tries to eat organic foods, free of preservatives.

As the months went on, she thought what better way to remember her grandma and help other become aware of Colon Cancer. She decided to have a Colon Cancer Fundraiser. She printed off literature for everyone at the event to read and become more knowledgeable of Colon Cancer. Robin states, “Whatever I can do to spread the word and the blue (Colon Cancer Awareness Color), I will do. I know that my grandma would be very proud and this was very important to me. I wanted to spread awareness about colon cancer, so maybe I can help someone else become aware, maybe get testing early, change their diet a little bit or learn ways to prevent colon cancer.”

The event was spectacular with all the bells and whistles. You walked into Capri, grabbed a full swag bag (products, literature, goodies and more), walked across the red carpet into an amazing venue. Local Celebrity guests included Christina Scoleri from VH 1’s MOB WIVES Chicago show, as well as Jillian Conley. Jillian is a local television host and author.

Thousands of dollars in raffle baskets along the bar, desserts to die for and a fabulously fun photo booth for everyone to enjoy. Jenny Taylor Boudoir Photography staff was also there performing mini make-up sessions. The spread of food was amazing at the event. Pasta, Seafood and heavenly bruschetta.

There was a beautiful wish tree at the event. Guests we’re able to go, write their wishes, prayers or thoughts down and hang their tag on the tree. A picture of Robin’s Grandma sat by the tree.

It was a great afternoon to learn about colon cancer, donate to an amazing cause and spread the word. Francesca’s Fancy Flops also offers Colon Cancer Awareness Flip Flops where $10 of each pair goes directly to the Colon Cancer Alliance.
