Besides discounts and car-pooling to save on gas, some things are just more fun to do in groups. If your pals are bored with doing the same ol’ stuff, try these ideas for some fun things to do with friends.
1. Go to Weird Places
Visit the odd, bizarre, and quirky spots in your local area or take a mini road trip to a weird place in your state. Ask your local librarian for suggestions. Browse the local travel and history section in bookstores for ideas. Check local newspaper and TV stations for guides to the unique and unusual sites around town. Look on city and county websites for links to local guided tours like haunted buildings or peculiar mini museums.
2. Join a Ukulele Jam
It takes no experience to show up and jam along with most ukulele clubs. Easy to learn and fun to play, pick up a new beginner model for $15 and up from online shopping and auction websites. Ukulele groups often jam on the beach or at a local park. Hawaiian shirt and shades may not be absolutely required, but are often encouraged.
3. Liven Up a Movie Night
If you’re too young to remember when going to the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” was a big thing – back when movie theaters actually encouraged noisy shout-outs, food throwing, water gun squirting, dancing and singing along with the show — is still a thing in many areas. This campy fun flick is not for the prudish, but you can jazz up a movie night with friends in tamer ways like:
- Find a nearby Indie movie theater with special events like “pajama party chick flick classics,” a Wednesday Pitcher Show (with trivia and Jell-o shots), or outdoor picnic movies in the park.
- Host a movie musicals night with your friends at home. Sing and dance along or have a lip-synching contest. Popular musicals like “Mamma Mia,” “Fame,” “Flashdance,” “Grease.” or “Dirty Dancing” work well.
- Try a casual, drafthouse style, dinner movie theater for good eats and drinks during the movie.
4. Try a Cosmic Bowling Party
Most local bowling alleys have some type of late night, open bowling party on weekend nights. Gutter balls, spares, and strikes are simply more fun with the lights turned down, the neon turned up, and the music blasting. Most have a snack bar that serves food and drinks at your lane too.
5. Play Glow in the Dark Mini Golf
It’s much like the party-time, cosmic bowling atmosphere, but with varied holes and quirky special instructions on some holes. Several glow in the dark putt putt golf courses are located indoors these days making it a year-round, any weather, fun thing to do with friends.
6. Rock on at a Roller Skating Rink
Old fashion roller skating rinks have made a comeback in many areas. Some skating rinks offer standard or in-line skate rental options. Many include snack bars and video game arcades too, so newbie skaters can take a break (or two) and still have fun at the rink. Most offer free or cheap group lessons. Have the most fun at open skating night parties with glow lighting and music on weekends.
7. Do a Planetarium Laser Show
Find a nearby planetarium for a spacey laser show to rock classics like Pink Floyd or The Beatles. Then, venture up to the roof for some awesome stargazing through powerful telescopes.
8. Sing Karaoke at Clubs
If you and your friends are already into karaoke at home, then take it up a notch in public. Or, if the Friday happy hour scene is your after work routine, then move on to the karaoke stage. You don’t have to sing if you get the jitters as just being in the audience to cheer on others is big fun too.
9. Try White Water Rafting
If your crowd loves swimming pools, water parks, and carnival rides, then find the nearest white water rafting adventure on a river to boost your outdoor adventures into a natural setting. Lasting from a few hours to half and full day excursions, first timers should go for a guided run at the easy level. For an even gentler voyage, go with tubing or canoeing for a fun day with friends.
And if your friends aren’t up for changing the routine, then find some new friends to do fun things with on websites like meetup.com or a social group like a local Newcomers club.
