7 Most Awkward Moments of the 2014 Oscars

by yak max

From jokes about Jonah Hill’s anatomy, to Cate Blanchett’s decision to thank Woody Allen, last night’s Oscars had it share of awkward moments. Here’s a look at 7 cringe-worthy moments of the 2014 Oscars.

Jennifer Lawrence Falls on the Red Carpet

After tripping on the steps on the way to pick up her Oscar at last year’s ceremony, JLaw experienced another mishap when she took a tumble on this year’s red carpet. As she explained, “I don’t know how it happened so fast. I wasn’t even at the press yet. But there was a cone outside my car and yeah, I ran over the cone.”

During her opening monologue, Ellen DeGeneres joked that if JLaw won another Oscar, they should bring it to her instead of having her walk onstage again.

Ellen Talks About Jonah Hill’s Male Parts

I didn’t anything would top Jared Leto’s joke about his “tiny Brazilian bubble butt” at the Golden Globes. However, Ellen decided to continue the string of awards ceremony jokes about male anatomy. In reference to Jonah Hill’s racy scene from “Wolf of Wall Street,” as well as her own sexual orientation, the comedienne quipped, “you showed us something in that film that I have not seen for a very, very long time.”

Pizza Gag Runs Its Course

In an awards show that was already way too long, the ongoing pizza gag was unnecessary. In an earlier segment, Ellen asked the Oscar nominees if they were hungry, and calling for pizza. Later, we had to sit through another boring scene with Ellen passing around a hat to ask for tips for the delivery man. Watching her pocket Lupita Nyong’o’s lip balm was a bit shady as well.

Bette Midler Cut Off After In Memoriam Performance

During the in memoriam sequence, Bette gave a soaring performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” a fitting tribute to the stars who recently passed away. However, the poignant mood was cut short when the network abruptly cut to commercial while she was making post-performance remarks.

John Travolta Mispronounces Idina Menzel’s Name

When introducing Idina and her performance of “Let It Go” from the film “Frozen,” John referred to her as Adele Dazim. The next morning, a parody Twitter account, @AdeleDazim was created. As “Adele” tweeted (in reference to lyrics from the song), “Thanks for the introduction, John! #oscars. Travolta never bothered me anymore.”

Cate Blanchett Thanks Woody Allen

The “Blue Jasmine” star gave a thought-provoking speech talking about the advances that have been made for women in film, and how audiences do want to see women at the center of these films.

However, Cate was greeted with a confused reaction and lukewarm applause when she thanked director Woody Allen during her speech. Given that Woody’s adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, recently came out accusing him of sexual abuse, the Best Actress Oscar winner was in a bit of a no-win situation.

Was she right to thank her director? Or was she being disrespectful to Dylan?

God Gets Less Applause Than Woody Allen

During his Best Actor acceptance speech, the “Dallas Buyers Club” star thanked God and began talking about his faith. He talked about how “if you’ve got God, you’ve got a friend, and that friend is you.” Matthew was met with a befuddled reaction from the audience, as if they weren’t sure whether or not to clap. You know it’s awkward when you’re getting less applause than Woody Allen.
