Procrastination is considered the # 1 reason for people not achieving their career or personal goals. In my experience as a career & life strategy coach, I have had the opportunity to work with great professionals who clearly know what they want to achieve in life. The problem with them is that instead of working hard to achieve their goals, they allow procrastination to come and visit them, and instead of pushing her out of their lives, they allow her to make herself at home.
If this description fits you perfectly, continue reading. Below, I will share with you five (5) easy tips to overcome procrastination to be able to get one-step closer into achieving all your career or personal goals.
Tip # 1: Create a daily “to do list.” By creating a daily “to do list,” you will have a better idea of the tasks that you will need to complete to be able to achieve your established goals. This list will not only will give you the directions you need to follow to achieve that goal but also will help you in staying focused and organized during the entire process.
Tip # 2: Make a point to manage your time wisely. Procrastinating is the sister of “wasting time.” If you want to overcome procrastination, you will also need to work in your “wasting time” situation. Stop spending so much time on things that don’t help you in any away in achieving your life goals. By managing your time better, you will have a better chance to get closer to your goals than just allowing time suckers to rule your life.
Tip # 3: Speaking about “time suckers.” Get rid of them NOW. Time suckers are those tasks, situations, and even people whom, in one way or another, make you waste your time. Try to identify what or whom those time suckers are and get them out of your life ASAP. You will see that once you get rid of them, you will have plenty of time to work toward the completion of your goals.
Tip # 4: Work hard but don’t forget to take small breaks in between. Yes, working hard is the only way to achieve goals. However, working hard without taking breaks in between will lead you straight into a mental burn out. And, that my friends, will be worst than procrastinating. That being said; take time between tasks to clean you mind and recharge your spirit. By doing that you will be clearing your mind and getting it ready for the next round of tasks.
Tip # 5: Reward yourself after completing a task and/or achieving a goal. After completing a task or a goal, take time to reward yourself from the job well done. Have a drink, go out to eat with your friends, watch a movie, etc. The thing here is to “congratulate” yourself for working as hard as you did. At this stage of the game, you can honestly say that you deserve it.
As you can see, my friends. Overcoming procrastination is not as difficult as it may seem. It only requires patience, perseverance, and dedication. Don’t waste any more time; try these easy tips and you will see how your goals go from distant dreams to reality in no time.
