Life can be very stressful so I like to come up with ways to help reduce the stress I experience on a day to day basis.
I live in an apartment, so I don’t have a lot of room for a huge garden. I do have enough room for a couple plants. For around 20 dollars, I was able to get a small selection of plants, pots, and soil. I check on them in the morning and water them. Throughout the day, whenever I need a break, I go outside and check on them. Seeing all those little plants that I’m helping to grow is wonderful for relieving stress. Having a non-work related hobby is a great way to unwind.
I go to the gym three times a week for an hour. On the days I don’t go, I take the time to stretch in the morning for 10 minutes. It’s amazing how much better I feel on those days where I sweat for a good 60 minutes. Even just stretching helps loosen up my limbs and relieves the soreness and tension that I build up throughout the day, from stress and sitting too long.
One problem I have is I will jump from times with a lot of free time, to feeling like I’m going to be crushed under everything that needs to be done. Putting things down in list format helps me figure out what needs to be done and when. I can pick just one thing off the list and when I’m done cross it off which is a highly satisfying feeling. Crossing items off is a physical reminder that I am making progress in my tasks.
Keeping Track of My Finances
I have a limited income and when I don’t know how much money I have available to me, it’s stressful. Getting in the habit of keeping track of my expenditures has been hard, but at the same time it’s been worthwhile. Not only do I spend less time worrying about money, I don’t spend less money on unnecessary purchases when I’m keeping track of each one.
All Play and No Work After 8 PM
It’s tempting to put off work until the last minute, so I give myself a deadline that is earlier than the work or project is due. Unless I have a project that absolutely requires my extended attention, after 8 PM, my time is mine to do with what I want. Typically this is a relaxing activity like reading or watching Star Trek. It helps me to unwind after my day and not lay in bed worrying about all the things I may or may not have to do. Taking time to relax ensures that when I do need to get down to work, I’m well rested and ready to tackle the task at hand.
