Allergies are one of the worst things a person can suffer from. There are so many allergies these days too which makes it impossible to be a sufferer anymore. From seasonal to food and medication, many people are allergic to one thing or another and sometimes multiple things. Being a suffered may make you think you know all there is to know about allergies but actually, you might be surprised to find out that there might be a few things you actually didn’t know about them. Here are 5 things you didn’t know about allergies.
They can give you a Shiner or Two
If you suffer from hay fever, you might wake up with a shiner or two. This is because it actually causes the blood vessels in your face to constrict. Why does this happen? Because when you are suffering from hay fever, the pressure in your nasal passages will get worse which can cause the blood vessels to constrict and this means the blood here won’t flow the way it should which can pool under your eyes. Then the blood flowing back to your heart will appear blue and cause what will look like a shiner and what is also known as “black eye syndrome.”
They Can Affect Your Organs
Another problem with hay fever or the scientific name for it, allergic rhinitis, is that not only does it cause your nose to run, your eyes to water, itchy throat, and irritated eyes but it can also cause skin hives and even cramping in your intestines. However, in very rare but serious cases of hay fever, one or more of your organs can be affected. It is usually the heart or lungs that can be affected but when something else like the kidneys or liver are affected by allergies, this usually means it is an indirect response to something more serious and system wide.
Pet Hair is actually not a Real Allergen
You sometimes might hear someone say they are allergic to pet hair. However, pet hair is not really an allergen. Although no one really wants to clean up the extra pet hair from their cat or dog shedding, this is not what is making them sick. What is really making them sick is the pet dander which is the dead skin from the pet, saliva, and the urine that is trapped inside the pet hair. These things could also be airborne in the air you breath that could be making you sick as well.
Allergic Addiction Syndrome is not real
Although some people actually believe that the food they are allergic to is addictive to them, this is not true at all because it is impossible. Actually, we all want something we can’t have sometimes but actually being addicted to the foods we are allergic to is not possible. It is really just a mind trick we sometimes may play on ourselves.
8 Foods are 90% Responsible for Food Allergies
There are actually 8 different foods that are 90% responsible for allergies. The main ones responsible include milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish, and shellfish. Some of these foods make the list of those responsible because children are the main ones allergic to them and the others make the list because they trigger a lifelong reaction. Children do tend to outgrow some of these food allergies, mainly milk and eggs. This is because as the GI tract in children matures when they grow, the system will get better at breaking down the proteins in them that actually cause the allergic reaction. However, some of the other foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish will cause an allergic reaction even after broken down which can cause a lifelong allergy to the food.
