The workplace is no different than the U.S. Senate. For those who don’t play along and are not willing to take risks, the workplace can be vicious. Bureaucracy and politics exist in every organization and meritocracy doesn’t always prevail.
The majority of employees are either promised or have the assumption that one day they will advance at work. Either way, you have to have some characteristics that will help you get there. Frank Underwood exemplifies that some individuals are willing to do anything at any cost to achieve what they want. His character and actions can help you tremendously to act and react in many situations. Even though you might believe that you have all of the traits listed below to succeed, it depends heavily on how you apply them.
Demonstrate Confidence – Underwood has the expertise that suggests confidence and he has the courage to do things that others only dream of. He has principles that although malicious, he communicates them with self-assurance.
To become confident you always have to challenge yourself. If you believe that there are people who can do your job better than you, then you have no business there. If you are confident others will see it, but if you lack it others will use it against you. Confidence is achieved through success. There is a positive correlation between success and confidence. The more successful you are, the higher your confidence level will be. On the other hand, sometimes one mistake can cost you up to 80% of your confidence level. If you lack the skills required to perform better, learn them, practice, do whatever it takes to improve, because that will swell your confidence.
Be Patient – It took Underwood some spiteful work to reach the peak. He didn’t win the elections and he didn’t become President overnight. Patience for him is a virtue that he obtained through experience.
We live in a world where the overnight success of the majority few is sensational, but in the real [work] world you have to be patient to get what you think you deserve. Like Underwood said: “one bite at a time, that’s how you devour a whale”, which indicates that strategizing is the best approach to amplify your fortitude.
Have Perseverance – You could either give up or fight. Unlike Underwood if you chose to fight, do it with honor. Act at the right place at the right time and use your best judgment.
Only because you didn’t receive the promotion you thought you deserved last year, that doesn’t mean you have to give up. You just need to work harder and use a different approach. Remember that whatever you decide to do, do it with integrity and don’t throw anyone under the train to get what you desire. But, make sure you put yourself first.
Be Loyal and Win Others’ Loyalty – One of the main reasons for Underwood’s revenge was President’s broken promise to make him a Vice President. On the other hand, his relationship with his chief of staff [Doug Stamper] was indestructible, because Underwood helped him during some tough times, which earned him Doug’s loyalty.
It is easier to be loyal than to earn others loyalty. Keeping promises will not only get you respect, but also trust. If you keep promises it shows veracity and if you help those who are vulnerable, in return they will trust you and have a sense of debt they need to return.
Keep It Private – Separate personal life from business. If anyone knew about Underwood’s relationship with Claire or Zoe they would have used it against him.
In case you want to share information with co-workers, only share it with those you know well and with those you trust. If something was to go wrong, people can and will use your flaws against you. Although you might have loyal people around you, people can break, which is the reason you should do the ‘dirtiest’ work yourself.
Remember that in real life (at work) almost everyone is fighting for the same raise or promotion. At the end of the day you have to understand that only those who work hard, play their cards right, and do it with integrity will succeed.
