Making a grilled cheese sandwich was a simple task as we grew up, butter two pieces of bread and put a slice or two of American cheese in the middle and grill until golden brown. Over the years grilled cheese sandwiches have become somewhat gourmet and are made with several different cheeses, pesto is used and even green chilies are added. You can get as creative as you like when making your sandwich and here are a few recipes that I think you might like to give a try.
Best-Ever Grilled Cheese Sandwiches– This recipe sounds awesome to me, almost like a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, only better. Made on sourdough bread this sandwich includes two different cheeses, Swiss and cheddar along with onion, tomato and bacon strips. Along with some other condiments like mayo and mustard and some butter for grilling, this cooks up into one delicious grilled cheese sandwich. You can switch it up if you like with things like Parmesan cheese sprinkled on the butter before grilling, maybe inside use some Italian seasoning or if you like it spicy, add in some salsa.
Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich – This makes my mouth water, what a great twist on your basic sandwich and being a cheese lover, this version is a dream come true. This sandwich is grilled with either rye or pumpernickel bread and includes both Swiss and feta cheese crumbles. With some sweet onions and Greek olives added and some spicy brown mustard, you have your gourmet sandwich ready for the grill. You can switch up the breads if you don’t like these particular types and the same goes for the olives, any king will do or leave them out but made as designed, this is a great sandwich.
Pesto Grilled Cheese Sandwiches – Now this is a flavor that I really enjoy, I used to make several sandwiches that had pesto in them and it truly is a unique flavor that sets off any sandwich. The one thing that goes great with pesto is tomatoes and this sandwich includes both on walnut-raisin bread with some provolone or mozzarella cheese. Wow, that is a very creative way to make a grilled cheese sandwich and what an original flavor it has. I like using the provolone, but either of these cheeses will give you a creamy, melted stringy cheese and that is what this type of sandwich is all about.
Green Chili Grilled Cheese Sandwich – Now this is my type of sandwich, I love spicy and use chopped green or Ortega chilies in so many of my recipes, why not on a grilled cheese sandwich? Grilled on whole wheat bread the chilies are accompanied by some American and Monterrey Jack cheese with a bit of mayonnaise. This sandwich would go really great with a big bowl of chicken chili, but that is another recipe.
Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches – This recipe was made up for some students in a food and nutrition class and was such a hit that the students often would go home and make it for their families. This is such a great Italian recipe and you begin with Italian bread, you will be using pesto in this recipe as well with some provolone and mozzarella cheeses and this is optional but Marinara sauce which I recommend that you include when making this recipe. I think I would also sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on the outside of the bread for grilling, it would give it such a nice cheesy golden brown crust on the outside.
There you have 5 amazing ways to make a grilled cheese sandwich, use these ideas and get creative inventing your own special recipe. I suggest having some pickles to serve along with your sandwich, it is a natural compliment to them and some chips as well and what a great lunch or hey, make them for dinner and serve with that side of chicken chili mentioned earlier.
