Lately I’ve been looking into ways to spend the cash that I’ve been saving in new and fun ways. One of the things that caught my eye was Kickstarter, a website that allows you to find products or services in the making and pledge money toward their goal. Often you will find that donating allows you special editions of their product or certain amounts will gain you a certain exclusive group of gifts. Here are some of the popular crowd source funded projects that I’ve donated to. Look out for the release of these in the future as I’m sure many will become quite popular once released.
This was by far my favorite idea I’ve found on the website and I was excited to donate to this potentially great product. The Oculus Rift headset is a virtual reality gaming technology that would allow players to experience the world they were in on a first hand level. The most popular project that was announced for the Oculus system was a virtual reality version of the immensely popular game Minecraft. Unfortunately, when the developers announced that they had been acquired by Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, many of the backing game developers announced that they we’re pulling their projects out of the developing stage for the device, Minecraft being one of them. I was initially on board for all the cool games that could have come from this headset but the prospect of visiting Facebook in a 3D platform seems like a horrible use of this technology.
The 3Doodler pen is the next step in 3D art that you hold right in your hands. Since I love drawing I saw this and immediately jumped on board. The pen is electric powered and uses a patented process of quickly heating and cooling plastic to make anything you can imagine drawing happen right in front of your eyes. I received my kit that included 10 bags of plastic in different colors, the official 3Doodler pen, and a limited edition piece of art created by master doodler Ele McKay. The product is amazing and I can’t wait to see this pen hit stores. I’ve created a wide variety of objects from a miniature Eiffel Tower to some very complex 3D psychedelic wall art. I recommend trying this product as soon as it becomes available.
OUYA- A New Kind Of Game Console
The concept for this project is a great one and is bringing games to a larger community by making a console that goes straight to the TV, consisting of a tiny cube and a controller. Not only does the device allow you to play over 700 games immediately but it also allows anyone who purchases it to become their own game developer. The software is run on Android software and is compatible with over ten different game development engines. Now, not only can you be a player but also a developer. This tiny device is used for games but you can also add apps, stream movies, and keep photos all on one system. This product is already available and starts at only $99, making it much cheaper than any other console systems on the market offering comparable features.
CST-01 The Worlds Thinnest Watch
This, while simple, is a cool idea that anyone could use in their life. The watch weighs less than five pennies and is less than 8mm thick which renders it almost weightless. The product uses newer e-ink technology that requires a minute amount of power to operate a 1 1/2″X3″ screen. The watch charges by using a micro energy cell that you sit on a magnetic stand. Each charge reportedly lasts about a month and only takes 10 minutes to fully restore power. This product raised over 1 million dollars in backing and while I didn’t pledge enough to get a developer version, I will still be excited to finally purchase one of these watches in a store.
If you’re always in search of your keys or your pet is always running off to explore then the Find mini Bluetooth tracker may be for you. This tiny device connects to an app on your iPhone or Android device and allows you to track the position of the dog tag sized device. The Find even works as an alarm for your phone by triggering a loud noise when the two are separated from each other. The expansion capability of the device is impressive and can track an endless number of tags through one app on your phone. If you want to keep a better eye on your belongings the Find tracker may be a product to look for on the shelves soon.
Kickstarter is an awesome community and allows you to fund projects that are unique. If your looking for a special gift or just interested in giving someone the backing they need check this site and other crowd funding opportunities out. I can’t wait to start seeing more and more projects from Kickstarter be released on the market.
