Recently, I have become obsessed with bar trivia. Here is why:
1. Bonding with the staff. When you’re at your local bar at least once a week, you do get to know the staff. In rare cases this results in free drinks handed to you on the sly. In other cases this results in new friends and a rapport with the people that bring you your drinks. Knowing a bar staff has a lot of perks, and if you see them often enough then they tend to root for you. I’ve even had a waitress or two supply an answer to a question that my team was stumped on.
2. Could get a discount. If you win, often the prize is a gift certificate or a bar tab. This is good not just if you’re on a budget, but if you win and you want a celebratory shot. Some places even offer gift certificates as high as $50.00. This means that if you know your trivia you could be drinking for close to free.
3. Healthy competition. There is nothing wrong with a little healthy competition. If you play bar trivia once a week, you will find that there are other teams that do so as well. You may find that you develop a rivalry or an alliance. Nothing feels better than beating your rival! And if your allies win, sometimes they’ll buy you a drink for giving them some good competition.
4. Something to look forward to. When things get rough, and let’s be honest, they do a lot (it’s an unfortunate part of being an adult), having a weekly game of trivia can be something to get you through. Even if you don’t drink, having a weekly game of any sort if good for your mood. Just knowing that I am going to see my friends at least once a week, and we are going to have a good game, is a mood booster for sure!
So if you’ve never tried it, maybe get some friends together and find out which of your local bars has a round of trivia. It’s a lot of fun, even when you lose.
