You can ask anyone you know if they had an experience with a good manager vs bad manager under employment. Almost anyone will sit down and tell you a story how a manager helped them, taught them something or disrespected them and treated them as if they were a burden. Sure in a perfect world all managers would be caring, helpful, insightful, respectful and honest but that is not the case. I am not implying that all managers have to be perfect and on their game every night of the week. People make mistakes and that is understandable. I have learned 3 simple techniques that will earn and keep a positive relationship with your employees.
- 1. Be Nice. Yes sometimes it is that simple, just be nice to your employees. When you ask an employee to finish a task or start a new one, ask politely. When you have to write an employee up or give a verbal warning for an act of disobedience be nice about it. The write up or the words you use to tell them the mistake they have made lets them know they have made a mistake; you don’t need to scold them or embarrass them.
- 2. Thank you. Say thank you to your employees like you mean it. Whenever an employee does what they are supposed to look them into the eye, call them by their name and say thank you. Let your employee know that you appreciate the work that they do for your company. An employee needs reassurance and gratification from their superior to keep them motivated and satisfied with the company.
- 3. Stay Honest. Be 100% honest with your employees. It is easy to lose trust from your employees when you’re not honest with them. You want your employees to trust you as their leader.
If you can use these three easy tips, you will be surprised by the relationships you will create with your staff and the respect they will have for you.
