I made 3 mistakes proposing to my girlfriend. To cut a long story short, she said “yes”. But that was no thanks at all to the way I proposed. I think I got by on great hair alone. Or something. It’s a mystery to me. Anyway, when I decided to propose to my girlfriend, I wanted it to be unique and memorable, with a perfect touch of creative romance and traditional style. Here are my 3 mistakes:
I was too obvious on the day
I’m a T-shirt and jeans guy. But I wanted to be a bit classier for a day that I hoped my future wife would remember fondly for the rest of her life. So when I asked her to dress up nicely out of the blue one day, she was immediately suspicious. I panicked, and she saw right through me – she knew something was up right from the beginning.
I told her she was wrong (even though she was)
My dream was to propose to my girlfriend at the spot where we met. But the place where we met had closed a year previously. I KNEW that it used to be on the North side of the plaza. While we were walking towards the place, I tried to emotionally prep her by talking about the day that we met. She told me it was on the other side. I told her she was wrong, and that it was on the North side. I was treated to an uncomfortable silence for the rest of the walk to the bench I had picked out.
I didn’t plan “the next step”
Miraculously she said yes after I got down on my knees and asked the question. And… I was done. I had been so fixated on dressing up nicely, taking her out to an emotionally important spot, and saying the words, that I really hadn’t thought through the next step. Fortunately we live in a pretty big city and there was an Oktoberfest tent nearby. Problem solved. To this day, the only picture we have of that day is a shot of the two of us dressed to the nines with large steins of German beer.
So all’s well that ends well I guess, but for a long while I felt a bit guilty that I maybe hadn’t provided the most memorable day for my soon-to-be wife. Fortunately, we pulled off the perfect wedding and have been living pretty happily ever since.
