Most people who work from home enjoy the luxury of not having to face a daily commute and keep restrictive hours. However, your home office has its own set of difficulties. Many rooms become catchalls and organization can be an ongoing uphill battle. The following 10 tips are designed to help you get your workspace organized and keep it that way!
One – Declutter:
The first step is to declutter your office . Create open areas by placing materials in labeled boxes, or baskets, and start getting rid of items that you no longer need!
Two – Establish Workflow:
Decide on a workflow pattern that works for you. As you sort through your containers, set up projects, folders, and materials in a manner that will increase productivity.
Three – Clear Out the Old:
Get rid of everything that you no longer use. Scan documents and throw away old magazines. Shred papers and sell/donate outdated electronic devices.
Four – Organize Wires and Cables:
As you clear out, you may find that cables and wires have become tangled and hazardous. Whenever possible use devices with wireless connections, and bind remaining wires into organized bundles.
Five – Consolidate Electronic Devices:
There’s no reason to have separate phones, fax-machines, scanners, and printers in your office when a unified system can work more efficiently and save space. Consider a copy-machine that serves several functions and move items off your desktop.
Six – Office Furniture:
Clear off and organize bookshelves and tabletops. You may want to purchase a shelving unit for texts and materials, or a file-cabinet, and replace your desk-lamp with an overhead lamp.
Seven – Clean, Paint, and Decorate:
Once surfaces have been cleared, this is the ideal time for a thorough cleaning, a fresh coat of paint, colorful organizational units, and new prints on the walls. Once everything is cleaned and refreshed, you can begin to put items back in place, file papers, and get a fresh lease on your office space.
Eight – Set up a Daily Organizer:
Review your daily-planning system. You may want to reinvent your to-do calendar either by setting up a computerized program, or purchase a different type of day-planner.
Nine – Keep your Desk Clear:
Free up desk-space. Place your computer, project folder, the inbox, and one or two small photos beside you as you work.
Ten – Maintain your Computer and Office:
Set up a regular time to sort papers, tidy your office-space, and plan your weekly activities. While you’re at it, this the perfect time to organize your computer using a similar method for purging, filing, and backing up information.
An organized office will help free up your mind, inspire creativity, and provide ongoing opportunities to earn money !
