Jeff Fisher played at University of Southern California from 1977 to 1980 as a defensive back after being an All-American at Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California.
Jeff Fisher played at USC with future NFL stars: Ronnie Lott, Joey Browner, Bruce Matthews, and Dennis Smith. While at USC, he won a National Championship in 1978 and was a recipient of PAC-10 All-Academic Award.
Jeff Fisher was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 7th round, 177th overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft as a defensive back and a punt returner.
Jeff Fisher suffered a broken leg during a game in 1983 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Future Pittsburgh Steeler Coach Bill Cowher was their linebacker at the time. While tackling Jeff Fisher on a punt return, he broke his leg effectively ending the 1983 season for him.
Jeff Fisher was a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears but didn’t play any part of the year because of a career ending ankle injury. During the 1985 season, Jeff go his first taste of coaching since he spent his time on the injured reserve that year as a defensive assistant coach to Defensive Coordinator Buddy Ryan.
Jeff Fisher was hired by Buddy Ryan in 1986 to be a defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Just two years later, he was promoted to Defensive Coordinator at age 30, the youngest in the NFL. For the next two years the Philadelphia Eagles would lead the NFL in Interceptions and sacks in 1989 and in 1990 they would lead in defending the run and runner-up in sacks.
Jeff Fisher from 1991 to 1994 would be the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the St; Louis Rams and the San Francisco 49ers respectively. In 1994, he was hired to be the defensive coordinator and was promoted that same year to be the Head Coach of the Oilers.
Jeff Fisher was the head coach for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans from 1994 to 2010 compiling a 142-120 win/loss record. He led them to one Super Bowl appearance, which they lost to the St. Louis Rams, 23-16 at Super Bowl XXXIV. Fisher finished with a losing playoff record going 5-6. Losing three Divisional Championship games, one wild card game and one AFC Championship game.
Jeff Fisher took over the head coaching job with the St. Louis Rams in 2012. His two year record at St. Louis is a losing record of 7-8-1 and 7-9. This makes it four years in a row he has had a losing record as an NFL head coach.
Jeff Fisher has produced sub-par head coaches from the three assistants that made the jump to be a NFL head coach. The three were: Detroit Lions Jim Schwartz, Tennessee Titans Mike Munchak and Buffalo Bills Gregg Williams. All of had failing performances as head coaches combining for a dismal 38% win record compiling a cumulative 52-84 record.
