He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He was a standout basketball player at his high school, St. Vincent – St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. Although he verbally stated that he was going to play at the University of Maryland, he decided to enter the NBA Draft when he graduated from high school.

He admired a number of professional basketball players when he was growing up. Some of the basketball players that he liked were Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady, Magic Johnson, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan.
