Description: The Zip it Drain Cleaning Tool is about as simple as can be. The entire thing is made of white flexible plastic. At the top is a loop that you use to hang on to the tool. The loop can also be used to hang it up when you are not using it. In total the tool is 20″ long. 2″ for the handle loop, and 18″ for the actual drain cleaning tool. The cleaning portion consists of a row of little barbs pointing up on each side of the tool. So when you slide it down the drain it goes down easily, but when you pull it up, it can grab any hair or debris in the drain and pull it out with the tool. The barbs are not sharp enough to hurt you.
Reusable or disposable?: When I first bought this it was marketed as reusable, but lately I have noticed that it is being suggested to just throw it away with all the gunk it gets out. Personally I have been using my original tool for years. When I first got it we had three girls in the house with long hair so I had to use it once a month. Now that it is just me with long hair, and no kids taking showers I do not seem to need to use it more than a couple times a year. I am sure I have used my original at least 20 times and it still works fine.
Made in the USA: The Zip it is made by Cobra Products Swedesboro, NJ, and is made in the USA. For more info go to www.zipitclean.com/
Where to buy: I bought my first zone at Ace Hardware but the others I bought from Amazon.com. They are very inexpensive. I do not think I paid more than $3.
Using the drain cleaner
Instructions for use: To use the drain cleaner simple push it down the drain you want to clean. Depending on your drain and what is down there, you may have to wiggle it a little. Make sure to hang on to the loop on the end because you do not want to drop it into the drain and then have to worry about fishing it out. After it is fully inserted in the drain I twist it a little to make sure I grab as much as possible. I will admit the stuff that comes out can be rather gross so you might want to wear plastic gloves for the job. If you have a bad clog you might have to repeat this process a few times to remove all the hair. Then flush the drain well with hot water to clean out anything that might be remaining.
How well it works: I am completely happy with the way this product works. Considering how little I paid for it and how easy it is to use, I can not complain about anything. It has saved me a lot of grief and also saved money, since I do not have to call a plumber.
How long it lasts: The product is designed for a single use, but I have used mine over and over again. Eventually some of the barbs might bend down so at some point I will have to replace mine. It will be most effective when it is brand new. I put a small hook in my shower and keep it hanging there for future use.
Final thoughts and rating
I am giving the Zip It Drain Cleaner 5 out of 5 stars because I am able to clean my drain for very little money and only a little mess.
