It’s sad to hear that the company behind such games as Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong Country and some of the infamous kinect games are in the middle of laying off several employees.
It’s been reported by Eurogamer that low numbers for Xbox’s flop Kinect Sports Rivals has forced rare to let go as many as 16 members. Even after it was reported by Microsoft that the game was a success. The real sales numbers were released and had to force this layoff. Microsoft didn’t release the numbers. As stated, Eurogamer has heard from Rare that it could be as much as 16.
A Microsoft spokesperson did give Eurogamers the following Statement
“At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of Rare’s commitment to this goal, we have made a decision to change our development process and methodology at Rare to best support our future projects, this has led to us reviewing the skills and the makeup of our development teams in our business.
“Rare continues to invest in our people and future projects.”
I guess we will just have to see what will happen in the near future for Rare. It’s been quite a journey for Rare. A game company that started as its own entity. Making games for many systems, mostly Nintendo related systems, but a few others as well. Became a company under the Microsoft umbrella. Mainly making games for the Kinect.
