Working your first summer job can be an exciting time for a teen, earning money for the summer and affording their own video games, movies and other activities that parents might not otherwise afford them. Here are some ideas that can help a teen bring in the extra cash.
Dog Walking – What better way to make money during the summer than working outside in the fresh air, enjoying the beautiful surroundings and getting some exercise at the same time? Dog walking is a great way for a teen to make some money during the summer months when many pet owners may not want to go out on those hot days. For some, like the elderly, there are those that have pets but can’t physically manage taking them out for a walk. During vacation time or even while away on short business trips there are people who would be happy to hire someone to walk their dog or dogs for that matter. Why not take on several customers, the possibilities are endless.
Washing Cars – During the summer when school is out the weekend car washing events that the various school groups put on won’t be happening. This is a great time to take advantage of all those customers who have become used to having their car washed to continue to do so while putting money in your pocket. You get to be outside, enjoying the beautiful weather and surroundings and while staying cool at the same time. You can do this on your own or get together with some friends and do it as a group. If you get enough customers lined up you might want to check with your local church and see if you can host your car wash in their parking lot.
Summer Camp – Most of us have attended a summer camp at one time or another and if you remember, there were mentors there to work with the children. Someone for the kids to turn to, help them when they are unsure of where to go or what to do. Most summer camps are looking for good mentors and hard workers, but work hard they will and they should be aware of what is expected of them before they apply. What better way for them to earn some money while learning responsibility, respect and leadership and the difference they will make in other peoples lives.
Pizza Delivery – With so many kids out of school for the summer and parents off at work ordering pizza is a quick and easy fix for those hungry kids as well as those tired parents coming home from a hard day at work. Teenagers can check with their local pizza restaurants that deliver and inquire about a summer job. Working in a neighborhood that they know and with most teens, having their own car, this is a perfect way to bring in some summer income. Learning to be prompt, courteous, working with others as well as being a safe driver are all things to be learned while working as a pizza delivery person. Maybe one of the perks might be some free pizza and what teen would not gladly take advantage of that?
There is another benefit to your teen working during the summer and making their own money, you don’t have to dish out your own money to afford their summer activities. Trust me, they will want to spend your money before they spend their newly earned cash, but this is another opportunity for them to learn. When it is their own money, they will learn to be more selective in what they spend it on and thereby learning the value of the almighty dollar.
