As a work-at-home mom I tend to put myself last. I find it challenging to balance the always present home chores with my work and the child care when the kids aren’t at school. By the end of the day, I barely have the energy to brush my teeth. Forget doing a full skin-care routine. But I found by carving out little bits of time for my personal care, I felt better about myself and became more productive.
The first step is taking care of your basic beauty needs: skin care, oral care, shaving. Think of all those little basic care steps you used to take. Now add them back into your routine. How? If you think about it, most of them only take a few minutes. Tell yourself that these tasks are not negotiable and you will take time to do them. It really doesn’t hurt your productivity, but you will feel better knowing that you’re taking care of yourself.
Since I’m usually exhausted when I go to bed, I started doing my nightly skin care routine earlier. When the kids are in bed, I head to the bathroom to clean and moisturize my face. Sometimes I even brush my teeth early so I avoid snacking later.
Beyond the basics, treat yourself occasionally with extra pampering treatments. Since you work from home, you can go a facial mask while you answer emails or soak your feet while you handle your taxes. If the budget allows, get out of the house for an actual spa treatment or massage. The special treat makes you feel relaxed and you may feel better prepared to tackle your work when you get back home.
Make It Up
You don’t need makeup to look great, but many women feel better with a little color. Even if no one other than your kids will see you for the day, take a few minutes to put on some eye shadow, blush or lip gloss. Or give yourself a weekly pedicure so your nails look great as they fly across your computer keyboard. It really is the little touches that boost your confidence.
Dress for Success
If you work from home without any Skype sessions or in-person meetings, it’s really tempting to sit around in yoga pants all day. I still occasionally give in to the call of the sweat pants. But getting dressed in clothes that you might wear for a casual office environment just may give you the push you need to focus on work. When you treat working from home like a real job, you tend to be more productive.
You don’t have to sacrifice comfort in the clothing department. A casual knit dress is comfortable while still making you feel great about yourself. Bonus: you won’t worry about answering the door or running a few errands because you’re already dressed.
The bottom line is work at home moms deserve a little attention and pampering. Just because you don’t see coworkers or spend your days in a public office doesn’t mean you should give up your beauty routine.
