Mystery, suspense, drama… “Winter Soon” by David Michael Martin has all it needs to get the readers hooked on the story and characters. If you feel like reading a fast-paced novel with an underlying psychological theme, then this is the best choice you could make. “Winter Soon” is one of those books that keep you glued to the pages the moment you open them.
John is the central character of the story. In May 1973, he and his two best friends, Meech and Hoxie, take a trip in Maine’s Moosehead wilderness for some trout fishing. There is a lot of tension between them, as Meech blames Hoxie for his and his wife’s breakup. What he doesn’t know is that John was the one who has always been silently in love with his wife. One of their confrontations leads to the death of a game warden. As expected, this tragedy unifies them. Now they need to forget about their personal problems and do something to cover up the unfortunate accident.
John, Meech and Hoxie manage to get back to New Jersey without raising any suspicions from the people of Greenville, the game warden’s town. After they leave, an investigation is set into motion, and the main suspect is Byron Trask. It seems that Byron was having an affair with the game warden’s wife, Sarah, who was also pregnant. However, John cannot live with the thought that he was involved in the death of an innocent man, and he goes back to Greenville. What he will find out will change his life forever.
“Winter Soon” is an amazing novel with a complex plot, intriguing twists, and very believable characters. The author managed to create realistic characters that readers can easily relate to. John, for example, is one of those people that you can love and hate at the same time. On one hand, the fact that he helped cover up a murder shows that he is weak and selfish, but, on the other hand, his actions are perfectly understandable. When faced with such a tragedy, John did what he thought was best to protect himself and the ones he loved. The fact that he goes back to Greenville and tries to help the game warden’s widow means that he has a conscience and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the woman’s forgiveness.
Fans of psychological thrillers will absolutely love “Winter Soon”, and will want more of the author’s brilliant writing after they finish reading the last page of the novel.
