Piece of wood (optional)
Tea light or taper candle and holder
Glue, nails, and/or screws
There are various levels of camping. One person might go out and buy all of the latest camping, hiking, and fishing gear, whereas another person might just bring some things from home. If you fall into the latter category, you might be interested in a light source that won’t go out when the wind blows, and will still burn if it rains. A wind and rain-proof camping candle is a handy thing to have and you can find the things to make it at home.
A fruit, vegetable, or other can is exactly what you need to make the wind and rain-proof candle for your camping trip. While you’re at it, make several; you’ll likely need more than one candle to light the entire campsite. Keep in mind that a small can will only hold a short candle; a large can is ideal.
Have you ever seen tea lights that are sold by the bag? Generally, they’re white, unscented, and each one comes in a cheap metal holder. That type of candle is the perfect choice for the camping light because it comes with its own holder. However, a tea light doesn’t offer many hours of burning time. Alternatively, you can use a metal cap of sorts, and set a short taper candle in it. You can find an assortment of suitable metal caps at most any home improvement store.
To keep the can from rolling or moving, use a piece of wood (optional). Lay the can on its side and nail, screw, or glue the can to the wood. Set the wood on any flat surface outdoors to get the wind and rain-proof candle situated. Light the candle, set it on the inside edge of the can, and then slowly scoot it back until it’s about halfway into the can.
The outdoor candle can actually blocks some of the light so don’t expect the candle to throw off a lot of light. It is enough, though, to see your way around the area. To ensure that the candle does what it’s supposed to (stay lit), position it so that the bottom of the can is against the wind and/or rain. Nothing will be able to blow into the can so your candle won’t blow out.
Taking some cans, candles, and matches to your next camping place is a really good idea so start eating your vegetables now! A large can, such as one containing foods for a group of people – or even a paint can – works great for making the handy candles. See, you didn’t need those expensive camping lanterns after all, did you?
