It’s so fun listening to urban legends, especially the ones that have us on the edge of our seats waiting to hear more about a story, waiting to hear the many versions of this one story, or wondering whether or not there is any truth to the story somewhere in history. Some urban legends seem ridiculous while you can’t help but wonder about others. There are a ton of reasons why urban legends are fun to tell and listen to and the more urban legends to tell, the more fun it can be.
Too Crazy to Be Real:
The freaky thing about urban legends are the fact that most are too crazy to even be real. But that’s one of the things that makes them interesting. Some of the craziest things stem from something that happened in reality but with a fictional twist. It could be any legend or folklore story, or it could be based on something that happened that involved a person we all know. Not all urban legends are that old, but the ones that are, are some of the best.
Another crazy thing about them are the fact that some of them are actually real stories, simply told in a way to sound like an urban legend but are 100% real. You’re constantly wondering if they’re real or not and in the meantime you can’t help but enjoy the story. You can tell these stories anywhere; parties, sleepovers, camp fires etc.
Some urban legends are only good to listen to once in awhile or once or twice, but there are others that are so intriguing that you want to hear it over and over again, especially in a creepy setting like late at night, on Halloween or during a campfire. The best ones to tell in this case, are the ones that are scary. Personally, I love to hear the scary urban legends the most, and the many versions of whatever story I’m listening to or reading about.
As mentioned already, there are many different kinds of urban legends and different people are more keen to certain ones. There are:
Medical Urban Legends
Scary Urban Legends
Realistic Urban Legends
Hybrid Urban Legends
Some realistic urban legends can be a bit creepy, or they can be funny. The medical urban legends will surely make you think twice before going to the hospital. Just remember, it’s only a story. What’s so great about the hybrid urban legends are the fact that some points of the stories are taken from something that really happened and other parts are completely made up, just to give the story a bit of a kick. And you’re left to wonder, which part is real, and which part is fake. It’ll always leave you wondering and guessing and that’s yet another thing that makes them so fun.
Perhaps one of my most favorite things about urban legends are when they are adapted into films. The best ones to use in this case are the scary ones. It’ll make the perfect horror movie to watch on Halloween night. You can look up on the web the many different urban legends there are. My all time favorite scary urban legend is “The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs.” (also see here: The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs)This particular urban legend was actually adapted into different films, three of them in which I love the most: Black Christmas (1974) and When a Stranger Calls (1979) and When a Stranger Calls Back (1993)
