This may come as a shock to some but in the copycat league that is the NBA, the 76ers will be a playoff team next year. The Sixers actually have a lot going for them. For one, they’re going to be a lottery pick in a stacked NBA draft. That’s important in the NBA. As one player can help turn around an entire franchise. More so than any other sports league.
Two and more importantly, they have their 1st round pick from last year Nerlens Noel coming back from injury. Noel is a defensive beast who has huge upside. The 76ers could end up being the new age version of the San Antonio Spurs.
In 1996, the Spurs’ David Robinson was riddled with injury throughout the entire season. So when the 1997 draft came around, the Spurs were sitting pretty with the overall #1 pick in the draft. Their pick ended up being Tim Duncan. Arguably the best power forward of all time.
Now Nerlens Noel is no David Robinson but that’s not to say he can’t have a great NBA career. In fact, we don’t know what he’s capable of because he’s yet to play a single minute in the NBA. Pairing him up with up and coming star Michael Carter-Williams, high flyer Thaddeus Young, and 7 foot Byron Mullens is a solid start. Add a #1 overall pick and you have a playoff team in a weak Eastern conference.
The 76ers may be the laughing stock of the NBA now but come next year, no one will be laughing.
