Today, we get caught up in so many situations and it’s hard trying to figure out how to work our way out of them. Self defense is one of those things many people should learn in order to assist them in these many situations. It’s a tough world we live in, so it’s best to always be prepared. It is not something only women should learn. Sadly, many people are still under the mistaken impression that women are delicate creatures and are the main ones that need to be taught self defense. The reality is, men and women should learn it. Here are some of the reasons why:
Avoiding General Crime:
Things happen every single day and we have no control over it. You hear about so many incidents involving people who are caught alone at night, and is preyed upon by sick and twisted individuals. Come to find out, if these victims had any knowledge of self defense, it would have made a world of different.
Unfortunately, learning self defense isn’t a guaranteed way to avoid getting seriously injured, especially if you were attacked with a weapon, however, it raises your chances of coming out of the situation alive. It’s extremely important to be able to handle yourself no matter what the case may be. So if you’re one of those people who believe bad things can’t happen to them, or that it’ll only happen to people in big cities, you’re sadly mistaken. Go out and take a few classes. Be proud of yourself for having that little bit of extra control of your life.
Handling an Abusive Relationship:
There are so many people who have a twisted idea of what a relationship ought to be. And they hurt their significant other like it’s no big deal. There’s mental, emotional, and physical abuse. ALL of them are just as harmful, so don’t even think about putting one over the other. Women, and men these days, become so battered and bruised. The sad thing about this situation is the the victim becomes used to the violence and think it’s normal. Well, it isn’t.
Once you begin to realize that you don’t have to be anyone’s victim, that you’re stronger than what you think, it will be the first step in gaining control of your life so you can escape the abuse. If there are children involved, think about how all of this is affecting them. If you’re so caught up in a relationship and you don’t want to or are afraid to leave, think of your children. Do you want them becoming a victim just like you? Do you want them growing up believing an abusive relationship is normal? Get help. Learn self defense.
Sadly, many people have died or became severely damaged because they refused to leave. Try doing everything you can make sure that doesn’t happen to you. If self defense is your last or only option, go for it. An extra bonus with this besides taking your life back, is being able to avoid another abusive relationship in the future.
Increase Self Empowerment:
Sometimes many people don’t learn self defense because of a harmful situation. They learn it because it simply helps them feel strong. That’s fine too. That is still a great reason for learning it. Lots of people have a hard time finding their way in life. They feel that they are useless and can’t do anything right. Once they begin learning self defense it gives a sense of positive power that can be hard to describe. Personally, it’s a great feeling.
Not only will you be empowering yourself, but you’ll be empowering and inspiring those who also need it. You can be their motivation. If you have a hard time finding you way in life, there’s a purpose right there to be proud of. Empowering others and raising yours and their self esteem is one of the greatest gifts to give.
Getting In Shape:
This is one of the basic reasons for learning self defense. Not only will it help keep you safe but it can be a major contributor in keeping yourself fit. And that’s something everybody wants.
As a martial arts practitioner, I hear all the time how self defense will take too many years to learn, so therefore many people will avoid being bothered with it. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Although you can use martial arts to defend yourself, self defense and martial arts are two different things. Some self defense classes don’t even teach about combat, but rather different scenarios on how to avoid a dangerous situation.
Even if all it takes is learning how to use pepper spray, mace, or stun guns, that’s a self defense move right there. There are also rape prevention classes, neighborhood watches, and a buddy system, meaning that if you are mostly in a situation where you’re always alone at night, creating a buddy system will help guarantee your safety. Be creative and do whatever you can. It can’t be stressed enough the lives that could have been saved if measures were taken in order for it to be prevented.
