Don’t worry, there are no spoiler alerts here. Why is the Walking Dead so popular, well let’s see….re-animated corpses feeding on the living, humanity turned against itself, complete and total chaos….once a week in your living room. That pretty much explains it. The Walking Dead has turned into a phenomenon beyond measure, with merchandising hitting the Disney level. Look around you, everywhere you turn there is a Walking Dead promotion, t-shirt, board game, you name it. I’m sure most people have figured it out by now, but the show is actually based on a popular graphic novel that had quite a cult following before the television came into the picture. I can still remember my own anticipation when the first season of the Walking Dead was announced and somewhat disappointed to only find out it was only going to be six episodes long. Those six episodes changed the landscape of television as we know it.
The Walking Dead is the ultimate survivor story, the ultimate ‘Man versus Nature, versus Man, versus Everything’ story. There is no doubt about it that ‘End of the World’ scenarios and ideas have been beyond popular in the last ten years, naturally a show like the Walking Dead will be a huge hit. The Walking Dead has done what ever zombie movie in history has never done, explain what happens after the main characters get away from the zombies. Up until the Walking Dead we lived in a world where at the end of a zombie movie we are expected to believe that it’s all over and everyone is okay, never explaining what happened to the rest of the world. The Walking Dead is a major television hit and here’s my reasons why.
I think this point has already been made but it bares repeating, it is the ultimate survivor story. End of the world, humanity thrust into complete chaos, anything goes….sounds like your typical zombie scenario. The key is to not only prevent yourself from being eaten, but to also survive when there are no zombies around.
Zombies, the coolest of the undead, in both the most literal and figurative sense. At this point people today are almost looking forward to a zombie apocalypse, there are even TV shows dedicated to people preparing for this sort of thing. The funny thing is, if the zombie apocalypse ever does come I think it will be a huge disappointment to people…..we’ll already know what to do!
It is as realistic as a post-apocalyptic zombie infested world can be. The Walking Dead certainly does not hold anything back in the visual effects department, the actors are filthy, the zombies are disgusting, and the world around them is falling apart. There is nothing I hate more than to watch a show that is set in a post-apocalyptic environment where the actors are always well dressed, trim, and proper (**cough**cough**Revolution**cough**).
Let’s be realistic, the list for why this show is so cool can be much longer than the three reasons I listed, I just choose not to bore you to death with all of mine. The folks behind bringing the Walking Dead to our TV screens has done it right and for that I applaud them. There is nothing I hate more than someone in Hollywood ruining a perfectly crafted graphic novel or comic book, which we have seen done a couple times in recent history but I’ll save that for another day.
