I hate going to the dentist, I had heard about oil pulling and was curious. Not only was it supposed to help reduce plaque and tartar, it was also supposed to help remove bacteria that could spread throughout my entire body and make me ill. I researched and found that most “oil pullers” use coconut oil. I am well stocked up on coconut oil so, that certainly wasn’t going to be an issue.
I discovered that the theory is you’ll be healthier and have whiter teeth if you oil pull at least once per week. I gave it a shot. I waited until the kids had left for school and my husband for work and began my adventure.
I bravely plunged a tablespoon into my coconut oil and placed it into my mouth. As the coconut oil began to melt I tasted its delicious flavor and decided that it wasn’t going to be so bad.
The directions I read told me to swish for 20 minutes. This is where my challenge came in. I began to swish, I thought about a few long songs I know and sang them in my head. I looked at the clock again and it had only been 7 minutes. This was going to take forever. I continued swishing. I decided to start a load of laundry. That at least kept my mind occupied for a few more minutes.
At 18 minutes I was ready to burst. The oil was completely melted and I felt like if I didn’t spit it out very soon I would have a real mess on my hands. I finally reached 20 minutes and spit it all out into the trash (I had read not to spit it down the drain due to the bacteria and clogging of pipes). I had made it.
I brushed, flossed and looked at my teeth. While I’m not sure if they were truly whiter as many of the claims promised, they were at least shinier. I rinsed my mouth one last time and went about my day. I have since done this about once a week for the past few weeks. Now I am noticing that I am healthier (everyone in my house except me has been sick several times in the last few weeks), and my teeth are indeed whiter. I’ll continue this for now, until something better comes along to battle the viruses that are going around.
