I do not have any medical or scientific reasons for giving up caffeine. I made the choice because I did not want to be addicted to anything. I quit smoking several years ago, so now my last lingering addiction is to diet soda.
Okay, Maybe I Do Have One Medical Reason
I should also note that if I have too much caffeine, I get heart palpitations. These palpitations are not dangerous, but they are uncomfortable and distracting. I have tried to cut back on caffeine in the past to avoid the discomfort, but I overdo drinking diet soda too often.
Being Addicted Stinks
Being addicted to anything is not fun. You have to be prepared wherever you go so that you do not end up experiencing withdrawal. Caffeine withdrawal is different for everyone but for me it includes a bad headache, inability to concentrate, and extreme fatigue.
When I say bad headache, I mean lying in bed wishing for unconsciousness type of headache. I do not like the prospect of feeling that way any time I am somewhere I cannot have a soda. For me, I think it would be better to quit. Once I quit I will never have to make plans to avoid withdrawal again.
My Caffeine Addiction Is Expensive
I spend around $20 a week on diet soda. That may not sound like much, but it adds up. That is a total of $1040 per year, not counting what I spend ordering a soda at a restaurant, on diet soda. I could go on vacation, or buy a new wardrobe with that much money.
Passing It On
I am also passing my addiction on to my kids. They drink diet soda because I drink it. When I quit I can work on getting them to quit as well. Then they will not spend money on caffeine or be addicted to it. Also, just because it is not causing me any medical problems does not mean that it will not cause them problems someday.
There are many good reasons to quit caffeine. Mine are personal and may not be a reason for others to quit. It was a hard decision to make because I know that it is going to be difficult. I am trying to prepare myself for the withdrawal. I know it is possible, though, and I will feel much better once I do.
