In our modern world, sometimes it is easier than ever to lose touch with the people we are close to. There are several ways to combat this problem, I find Facebook the best. Facebook is a very good social application in that it allows users to re-connect with old friends, stay in touch with relatives and friends who live long distances away, let’s you play games, makes following your favorite author, band or actor easy and Facebook can be used as a way to receive news from anywhere in the world wherever you are.
One of the best features about Facebook is that it is a great avenue for old friends and long lost relatives to find you. Before its kickoff it was very difficult to find out what happened to your best friend who may have moved away when you both were ten, or to track down good old uncle Jack who had a penchant for moving around. Now with Facebook the ease of such tasks is astounding. Simply type in a name into the search bar and voila! Send a friend request or start a conversation via inbox message and in the span of a minute or so, you are reconnected to an old friend or lost relative just like that.
Even if you knew where to find your friend from 10 years ago, or your Aunt Lucy sometimes staying in touch isn’t as easy as we would like. Perhaps your friend Joe is half way around the world in the Army and mail takes forever getting there and back, and phone call rates are expensive. Simply log in to Facebook and start chatting away as long as the internet connection is stable. Staying in touch with Aunt Lucy has never been easier, while she may only be a few hours away, now you can see daily pictures of her garden as if you were there. Let’s not forget all those cute baby announcements and beautiful bridal photo’s that make us feel as if we were part of those special days.
Facebook has a really wonderful gaming spectrum. Whether you are in the mood to farm, battle zombies or play bubble popping games there is something for everyone. This also provides a way for you to meet new friends who share your gaming interests. Zynga games such as Farmville, Castleville and Frontierviille offer the player the chance to build their own towns and complete quests. There are many different games that allow for hours of game play on Facebook.
Another element Facebook offers is that you can follow what your favorite author, band or actor is doing. With ease, you can check out book release dates or find out where R.E Bradshaw will be signing books. You could participate in book or ticket giveaways just by clicking a button from the comfort of your home. Need to know where Coldplay is playing next or want to see pictures from their last concert? It is very easy to do on Facebook. Keep track of where your favorite actor is filming and hope for a sighting.
Keeping up with the news is always a good idea. Facebook makes this very easy, you can either follow your local news stations or see what is going on from your friends’ postings. In the event of an emergency like a tornado or hurricane where power outages are rampant you can post onto Facebook that you are okay so as not to worry friends and family overly much. You can also pass along information to others on your friends list this way.
Some people might argue that Facebook fuels a lack of privacy. You just have to be mindful of what you post and keep vital information such as social security and bank numbers to yourself. I like the common sense rule of; if you don’t blurt it out in public, don’t post it on the internet. There is also the argument of your boss/ big brother or the NSA watching you to see what you are doing. Again my common sense rule comes into play here as well.
Others claim that Facebook makes it easy for your exes to find you and “stalk” you. I find that the best way for dealing with these situations is to keep your profile set to private, share only with known friends and advise them of whom not to share your information with. I would also advise to find the ex and block them from seeing your information, posts and pictures. This way they will not be able to interact with you in any way. Remember, you are on a public sharing site, so proceed with caution and you will be fine.
In conclusion Facebook is a very good social application in that it allows users to re-connect with old friends, stay in touch with relatives and friends who live long distances away, let’s you play games, makes following your favorite author, band or actor easy and Facebook can be used as a way to receive news from anywhere in the world wherever you are.
