One out of four veterans is homeless. About 23percent of all the homeless people in this country are veterans. There are men and women who lay down their life for this country and yet do not have a roof over their head or a nice soft bed to sleep in. No national records are kept on the number of homeless veterans there are. However the Veteran Affairs estimates there are about 200,000 homeless veterans in this country. About 63 percent of the 23 percent have been homeless three or more years. There are four times as many women veterans that are homeless than there non-veterans.
The reason there are so many homeless veterans is because the Department of Veterans Affairs has fallen behind giving out the moneys to these War Heroes. (https://www.military.com ) According to the Veteran Affairs Inspector General; the greatest reason for homelessness among veterans is brain injury.
There was a ground breaking for a new Veterans clinic that will be ready to open its doors a year from now. (https://www.sanfordherald.com ) Veteran’s hospitals are over crowed everywhere; however, our tax dollars are going to rebuild mosques around the world. Let me be very clear, I am not against the rebuilding of buildings that benefit the people of these countries; however, this country was founded on the separation of church and state. Our tax money should not be spent to rebuild churches somewhere in another country, or even in this country.
What is the solution?
Final Salute Inc. provides services for homeless women veterans. There are about 55,000 homeless veteran women in this country. (https://finalsalute.com ) The National alliance to end Homelessness focuses on effective and efficient solutions to end Veteran homelessness. There is also Vet-Tran that has a three part program to help homeless veterans. Veterans need a stable living place. Without a place to live it is very hard to find a job or go back to school.
