Anyone with a YouTube account, personal blog, or any other presence online where you put out information to the world knows that the Internet is not for the thin-skinned. Regulations on the World Wide Web are limited and people can get away with being mean and nasty. We know the insults they say, the hurt they cause us, and the damage our ego feels. The lone remaining mystery is why people are the Internet are so mean.
They Have No Talent
A truly talented person views competition in a different way from people who lack life skills. A talented person sees the strength of others and instead of destroying the competition they improve themselves. When a person has no gifts all they can do is try to bring everyone else down to their own level instead of working hard to rise to the top. Most people lack talent so unfortunately this is a rampant problem.
They Have Too Much Time
Too much time for anyone is never a good thing. Give these people Internet access and eventually they will do a few mean things to strangers, usually tacky insults. As limitless as the Internet can be, so are the limits of a person staying friendly.
They Are Incredibly Insecure
Insecurity always makes for a bad attitude. Very similar to people without talent, people with insecurities will try to destroy your self-esteem on the Internet as much as they can. Rather than support you they find every little mistake they can in hopes that you feel as bad about yourself as they do about their own lives.
They Are Generally Bad People
Some people are mean and nasty in all walks of life. Since you may only know them through anonymous comments on the Internet you cannot judge them beyond their criticism. In general people like to leave negative comments, specifically on reviews. Most people will not go out of their way to say something nice about someone else unless there is a benefit for them. For instance leaving a bad review on a hotel room could possibly get the person a free night as business owners would like to avoid the one bad review which can lead to a loss of business. Saying something nice suggests they would be willing to pay full price again.
You Actually Do Deserve It
Not that anyone deserves mean comments, but some of us do need to be reminded we are not perfect. Harsh criticism should be taken lightly from strangers, however we should briefly ponder if there is any truth behind it if only to improve ourselves and avoid becoming a negative insecure bad person with too much time on our hands.
