The Muppets are a satirical and often cynical bunch. The characters are directed toward audiences of varying ages but the Sesame Street program has always been intended to educate children. Which Muppets of Sesame Street have the best potential to teach our children? Which are the best teachers of the bunch?
Although Kermit the Frog is no longer a series regular, Sesame Street was once graced by the legendary Muppet. He was seemingly one of the ring leaders in his tenure on the program. Where-as all the Sesame Street gang have a purpose, Kermit was just an established character. He typically taught lessons about emotions, feelings and reason. Kermit may not have been the typical teacher but he taught valuable lessons that children need in their early years and could use later in life.
Although he’s been the subject of some controversy, Elmo has been adored by children since his initial debut. The character was thought to teach children bad habits by speaking in the third person but I feel this taught children just what speaking in third person means. Elmo also always learns valuable life lessons such as sharing, pride and friendship. He also has a curious personality that children can relate to. Elmo may have the most potential to teach our children due to this special connection.
Math is the same in every country. No matter what walk of life you choose, math is essential. Count von Count may be a child’s earliest encounter with math. When such an essential subject is the central focus of the character, one would find it hard to argue that Count von Count is a valuable asset to a child’s early learning.
Big Bird is a rather talented Muppet. The bird has been seen singing, ice skating, and writing. Despite his talented nature, the large aviary tends to misunderstand simple situations. Often times his children friends need to help him through his misunderstandings. This teaches children valuable problem solving skills that become essential later in life.
In a show meant to educate children, these Muppets stand tall among others as the greatest teachers. Children need these lessons early in life and The Muppets of Sesame Street are the best ones to deliver those lessons. The Sesame Street gang has been teaching children for generations and do not show signs of slowing down soon. Luckily for us, they properly educate our children with their years of wisdom.
