Haven’t you ever noticed that some outfits make you look amazing, while others turn out to be a little blah ? It’s not always the cut or the style that doesn’t suit. Sometimes, it’s the colors. When you know what to wear to best show off your own natural shading, you’ll always know how to look your best.
To know which colors work best for you, first you have to figure out your own natural colors. Start with your skin tone, which is the hardest color to change. Your skin tone is always going to be yours, so when you build a wardrobe with this as a foundation you’re on the right track.
Take off all makeup and put on a white T-shirt or towel. Look at yourself in a mirror, preferably one that’s in a room without a lot of background colors. Carefully study the different colors that create your skin tone. Do you have yellow, pink, red or blue undertones?
Skin with pink or blue undertones will look best in cool colors. Cool colors include blues, greens and grays. Dress in warmer color shades if your skin has more yellow or red undertones. Warm colors are bold: oranges, yellows and reds. Hold these colors up to yourself to see what works best.
Colors Are Art
Once you have a basic idea of which types of colors you should gravitate towards, find the shades that will enhance all of your natural coloring.
What color are your eyes? To show them off, choose a color that contrasts against them. Red and green are a classic example. Women with red hair often wear green to show off that rich color. If you have green eyes, wearing red will help them pop. Yellow contrasts against purple, and blue against orange. Use a color wheel, a basic art tool, to see which colors contrast and complement each other. Contrasting colors are directly opposite one another on the wheel.
To truly dress your best , you’ve got to dress for your hair as well. If your hair color is apt to change, invest in different scarves and jackets that you can wear over your blouses.
If your hair is dark in color, or if it has red or golden undertones, dressing in warm colors will complement that shading best. Red hair looks good with warm colors in pale shades. Peach and soft yellow both look good with red hair. Warm browns with gold undertones and rich greens suit this shade as well.
Hair that’s lighter in color can work with bold warm colors or cool colors, depending on the undertones. If your hair has golden undertones, rich shades like red and soft pinks will help show it off. Hair with grayish or bluish undertones will look good with cool blues, greens and purples.
Don’t forget that colors also have meanings , and they do evoke certain feelings. Identify several different colors that can and will work for your shading, and choose what to wear based on how you feel (or want to feel) and how you want to present yourself to others.
Blue is a calming color, but it’s also associated with sadness in popular culture. Red is associated with power, with passion, and with being bold. Red also has a negative connotation: anger. Yellow is thought of as a positive color, a happy shade. It’s considered to be a friendly color. However, some people find the color a little too bright for the eye.
Dress to suit your natural coloring, and always dress your best.
