In 1971, then President Richard Nixon declared war on cancer. More than 40 years later, we are still fighting this seemingly losing battle. With all the, billions of dollars that have gone into cancer research, many are asking the question, “Where do we really stand regarding the war on cancer?”
In spite of the enormous sums of money and decades of cancer research, neither finances nor studies thus far have put a stop this dreaded disease. I am troubled at the growing number of people I have known, or been told about, who went from doctor to doctor, getting MRI’s, radiation, chemo and other tests and treatment, only to die.
Family members should have to foot the bill for failed treatment, when they watched loved ones change from once active robust human beings, to skin and bones, and wither away. Memories of nausea, vomiting, hair that fell an other sufferings should not be the result of spending enormous sums of money, enduring multiple doctor visits, and hospital stays. Adding insult to injury, most health care practitioners, announce without an ounce of compassion, that there is no hope.
This is what happened to my mother. She began having headaches, losing her balance, her sight, hearing and eventually her soundness of mind. When test after test did not yield an answer, she was sent to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where more testing was done, including 3 MRI’s and 2 spinal taps. Finally, after her second spinal tap doctors told us they found cancer cells in her spinal fluid.
The medical team could not however, determine the primary source of the cancer, and said my mother’s condition was grave. They recommended Hospice, and basically sent her home to die.. My mother received no treatment only Oxycontin for pain. She passed away 5 weeks later, a shell of her former self.
There are many rumors floating around regarding cancer.. One day you read a report that a medical breakthrough cancer cure is near. The next day the Internet is abuzz with stories of miracle food cures. Stories abound, that the medical community desires to keep a real cure hidden, because their treatments make big money.
I find this one hard to believe because this would mean that doctors and pharmacists would be allowing their own family and friends to suffer and die from what some call the big C. I believe the medical professionals are doing all they can, but simply are not successful.
A change in diet can lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and regulate blood sugar, yet this no guarantee when it comes to cancer. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this dreaded illness. My grandmother and a former friend both had surgery for colon cancer and survived, while others have died. The ex friend is living 14 years later. My grandmother died 4 years after the surgery because of congestive heart failure.
When a test showed my grandmother had stomach cancer, her physician took my hand and we prayed. Th next test revealed no sign of the cancer. When my father was in a hospice center, and given 6 months to live, a childhood friend was visiting him, and prayed. My dad gained weight and lived another year dying of a heat attack. There was no sign of the cancer.
I have a friend who had breast cancer in 1995. She had chemo, lost her hair but is cancer free today and her hair is long and beautiful. Another friend had cancer 4 times. During her various illnesses she had a hysterectomy, bone marrow transplant and breast surgery. She battled cancer 12 years before it eventually took her life.
Until there is a drug, treatment, or even food cure that will render at least a majority of cancer patients healed delivered and set free, we will continue to stand right where we are in regard to the war on cancer; absolutely nowhere.
