It doesn’t matter how many times you tell your skin “30 is the new 20;” it’s not listening. No matter how young at heart you feel, your skin can show your age unless you take care of it. Prior to turning 30, I had basically washed my face with drugstore face wash and that was it. Once I hit the big three-oh though, I decided my skin care habits needed to change. I built a skin-care regimen for myself, and now, at 33, I have yet to see any fine lines or crow’s-feet. Here’s what I do to keep my skin looking supple and smooth.
Ok, I’m going to make a confession. I still use drugstore face wash. It just doesn’t stay on my face long enough for me to justify spending a lot of money on it. I’d rather invest my money in other skincare products, such as the next few items.
Research has shown that the best thing you can do for your skin is to protect it against the sun. That is why everything I put on my face before I go out, from moisturizer to concealer to powder contains an SPF of at least 15. My current moisturizer is Olay’s Regenerist Regenerating Lotion with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50, which works great against the sub-tropical sun I’m exposed to. There’s also an SPF 15 version, which will be enough for most people.
Some recent articles suggest that women in their 20s should avoid anti-aging products, as they are rich in fat and can cause break-outs. Once you’re in your 30s though, it’s good to start using these products for both preventative and treatment measures. Currently I use Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II after I wash my face, and before my night cream.
As my last step before I go to bed each night, I put on a night cream. You’re not likely to sweat or expose your face to the elements when you sleep, so it’s a good time to put something more intensive on your face. I’m currently using Clinique’s Moisture Surge Overnight Mask.
When it comes to exfoliating, I don’t like to be too harsh on my skin, so I avoid exfoliating scrubs. Toners are also used for exfoliation, but they often contain astringents that I find irritating. Instead, once a week I use a serum exfoliator like Olay’s Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir.
